So I started up my computer and it had a message saying
I\O error, please insert system disk and press enter

I put in the disk that came with the computer
it tells me to press R to start full recovery

I hit R, then it says " Making recovery partition please wait"
It goes about 1/10th of the way and stops going

Any ideas why this is happening?

    Cheers.

Sounds like you have a disk that remakes the partition for the os but no longer have the factory system partition on your hdd to recover from.

When you recently upgraded to vista did you do any partitioning? What is your system make and model #?
