I just found a box of old games in the closet and among them was "Kingpin: A Life of Crime" which I'd really like to play again.

The game installs correctly and the starting screen will load but after I select my preferences and try to load a new game it quits to the desktop and I get an error saying I need the CD in the drive, trouble is the CD is in the drive.

I've tried all three of my drives - Plextor Premium/Plextor 708A, Lite On 167T - and none of them work. I also made an image of the disc which I mounted in Daemon Tools and still no joy.

I've also tried the compatibility options for 95, 98, NT and 2000 in the properties of the game and still get the same error as above.

    Any ideas fellas?

What are your current drive letters? Could it be looking for what you had originally, like d:

You might want to download a crack.

    OR

It probably needs an update, which would probably be available at the offical site.

As I recall Kingpin was quite a popular game.

    Current drive letters are:

    D: 708A

    E: Plex Premium

    F: Lite On 167T

I'll look for the official patch :)

Thanks Toiletman, the game runs fine now that I patched it. It never occured to me that a patch on a game that old would make a difference but then again there's alot that doesn't occur to me these days :) Oddly enough it won't save games but it's not a big deal to me at this point.

I appreciate the tip SubaBud but the game was installed two PC's ago :p

It's a trip to play older games because it makes you really appreciate how far the graphics, interactivity, and sounds have come in the last six years :)

A very good resource for running older games is http://vogons.zetafleet.com
VOGONS, besides the Hitchhikers Guide reference, stands for Very Old Games On New Systems

Sounds like Moore's Law is coming more than true. =P I mean, we're WERE all drooling at Half Life 2, but that drooling was subsided by the announcement of the Unreal 3 engine among other graphic engines. And I'm pretty sure while we're drooling on Unreal 3 they'll be making an Unreal 4.

In other words, the drooling never stops... =)

A perpetual state of drooling. Sounds like me at the naked bar :)
