Yes a laptop IBM thinkpad. I just downloaded a bunch of updates from micosoft plus a driver update. I'm going to try all over tomorrow night after school. It's getting late and i'm tired of re-hooking up the laptop to the internet. I'll let you know tomorrow if this works.
Thanks for all the help.....binkie7 cute dog.

    Ok - keep us posted.

Fails (hope not) but post the log minus the serial # - looks like you had the last log posted right so you were good there.

Oh & txs about the dog :)

I am really curious about what is going on here too. I've been
burning backup disc successfully for a long time on all different
media. No problems (except for Saw III) until the last 3 discs I
burned. There were 6 or 7 very minor freezes on each of the 3
movies. (Sorry I didn't save the logs-will if it happens again.)
The only changes I have had is that I am using a new 100 pack of
Sony blanks and when I had my machine worked on the person that
did it put a new codec on my machine. The codec is AVI Codec Pack+.
I am first going to try a different movie with both the Sony disc
and a different brand. If that doesn't answer the question I will
uninstall this codec and see what happens. Will let you know in
    a day or two.

    Hey Shardel
Have you tried playing these back in the pc? Player may be the culprit.
Blow some canned air in it or use a dvd lens cleaner to try and clean the lens.
Firmware up to date on the burner?

Nero also saves the last 10 (I think it is) burn logs - fails and successes.
Look here for them (text files):
    Nero 6 - program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory
    Nero 7 - program files>nero>nero 7>core>nerohistory

Just need the last one - and be sure to edit the serial # - begins w/ 1A, 1C or 5C.

You could be right about cleaning the player. I haven't done that
in a while. I've only had time so far to burn the 2 discs on different brands of media. Haven't had time to watch them yet, but
I saw something really interesting while I was burning them. The
Sony DVD+R 16 times disc read as only 2.4 and 4 times compatible.
The TDK 8 times disc read as 2, 4, and 8 times compatible. When I
burned the Sony disc the buffer was up and down all over the place.
On burning the TDK disc the buffer never once wavered. They were
both burned from the same ISO file. (Both discs were burned at 4X)

What the make and model of the burner?
Sounds like the burner really isn't liking those Sony - reason for lower speed and buffer. Firmware update (if there is a newer one available) may do the trick.

It is an 8X Digital Research Burner. The firmware was updated when
it was in the shop 2 weeks ago. I don't think it likes these 16X
discs from Sony. I've used 8X Sony discs before with no problems.
I'm still not sure if it is the discs or the new codec. I'll know
more after I have time to watch these. In the past it has burned
many different brands of discs beautifully. Up until I used these
discs I had never seen the buffer waver once. Just one more fun
    thing to figure out.
Really appreciate all the help from everybody. You are all great.

    Keeps us posted.
May just be the discs - firmware might not fully support the 16x Sony's.

    Oh and your welcome :)

Ok everyone here's my update. It's the Sony disc's....damn! I took two DVD's Anchorman and Devil wears. Both burns with the Sony DVD-R (AccuCORE) failed. I then used the NEW Memorex i got from Staples and guess what...... IT WORKED! Now my question is has any one else had this problem? Does Nero 7 ultra need to be set diff? The Sony disc's are in a ugly mustard color package from Compuware. Oh yea!
I also bured on a very old Imation DVD-RW with no problem.

You might just have a bad batch of discs or your burner isn't compatible with them. I haven't had a problem w/ Sony made dvd's but that doesn't mean some drives might.
Pop a Sony then a Memorex disc in the drive and see who made then.
You can use Nero toolkit>cd-dvd speed - disc info tab.
Post that back. Are both brands rated 16x?

Same here. I burned 3 discs from the same ISO file. One was Sony
16X. One was TDK 8X. Then out of curiosity I also burned a Sony
8X. The two 8X discs played okay. The 16X disc would stutter
briefly then freeze for 2 or 3 seconds and then play okay. It
did this 4 times in the first third of the disc and then the rest
    of the disc played okay.
Don't know if your Nero 7 needs to be corrected. I burned my
    with Imgburn.

Both are 16x. I'm going to give them to my friend to see if he can burn on them.

Learned another lesson. When you take a computer to the shop, make
sure they don't fix something that isn't broke.
It turned out I was hassling two issues. My machine doesn't like
those Sony 16X discs. However it didn't like that codec pack that
was put on in the shop because "they thought it was better than the
weird one I was using" (quote from technician). When I uninstalled
that thing Imgburn went smoothly. The buffer didn't blink once. With
the other codec on there it was all over the place.

    @burngirl2 & Shardel
Just my experience but some 8x burners can be picky with 16x media especially if they don't have the firmware support.
Laptop burners esp since the support is limited at best on them.
I stopped using 16x media in my laptop even Verb was to hit or miss.
Now my older LiteOn (8x) has not problems w/ it.
All about the quality of the drive and the firmware support.

    @Shardel
lol - you got watch those tech guys sometimes - glad you sorted it out!

    @burngirl2
Using a cooling pad w/ the laptop? They can get pretty hot esp w/ the burner.

Took those Sonys back. The store said they had gotten quite a few of
them back. Used 16 times of 2 other brands and they burned fine.

Yes It was the discs. Now I fight with Best Buy to take them back...even after thier geek squad couldn't burn on them.

Guess I was luckier than you-didn't have to fight with Staples. They
took them back with no problems. Try going on the internet to the
Best Buy Web site and lodge your complaint there.
