I have downloaded many 700mb to 2gb divx/avi pirate movies and have been reading on guides to extract ac3 audio from these .avi files, however when i use Virtualdub it doesn't show i have AC3 instead is tries to save as mpg layer-3 or mp3 or wav, my question is
    1. Is there AC3 music in these avi files
    2. How do i extract it because it won't extract as AC3 says i don't have it, if it's not AC3 in these avi files how do i burn onto DVD to play on my DVD player

The AVI audio might be 2-channel AC3, but more likely MP3.
It is best to keep compressed audio compressed, if possible.
VDub will save audio decompressed, as a WAV file.
Note that CD audio is 44.1kHz sampling rate, whereas DVD audio is 48kHz.
Some people downsample 48 > 44.1 when they make AVI (which is not a good thing, it's unnecessary - please stop doing it!)
