I use Vitual Dub v1.4 and try to split large avi files. However in the new files video delays related to audio.The video delay becomes longer as the film goes on. So changing the audio delay in audio interleaving setting didn't solve the problem(In some scenes the audio video match was perfect but video played later as the movie goes on). Audio interleaves video every 1 ms. I've also used avichop v0.2 but also had a/v problems.
When you are splitting the files, are you making sure that you hold shift to keep it on a key frame? Otherwise, your audio will be off.
