I'm not suggesting the retailer is a crook, that's not the point. I've bought PC parts from dozens of places over the years, most of them with very sound business practices, but every single one of them sell deathtrap power supplies, it's just something that happens in the PC market. The

reason for it is that people buy PSUs thinking that a gaming PC needs 500 watts or more. As it turns out the vast majority of PCs barely use more than 200W. (Note, this does not make using 200W units for gaming PCs acceptable, you should always leave plenty of room ahead for upgrades and

to keep the PSU's lifetime up, no units stand up well to 24 hours use at their maximum capacity). The reason that people buy PSUs with huge wattage outputs though is that they have had problems with cheap crap units that say they're, for example, 450W, when in fact they will collapse if you try to draw more than 150W from them. This happens with over a hundred brands of PSU, there are plenty of dodgy companies out there.
Traditionally, Gold PSUs are the worst of them all, since lots of crap companies produce gold PSUs, but I can't name a single company that's actually any good that does.

Upgrade your processor to a Core 2 Duo, something like an E6750.
The following are all good Power supply units I'm happy to recommend.

    OCZ StealthXStream 600W (NOT GameXStream)
    Thermaltake Toughpower 600W (NOT PurePower)
    Corsair HX 520W
    Tagan (anything 500W or more)
    Antec (anything 500W or more)
PC Power & Cooling Silencer Series

They're alright, but not particularly great, along with companies like Enermax, who I haven't included for the same reason. You don't hear of too many major problems but the quality of the units doesn't impress me as much as the brands I listed. Coolermasters are also some of the noisiest power supplies there are out there.

Yup, that's the exact one I'm referring to. Your PC might not draw enough power to trigger it, but with today's high end video cards they make a hell of a din.
