problems with king kong and narnia

Burns that leave bad sectors. Some will play but not record. The same happens with some factory releases. I have a similar backup copy laying here on my desk. Do a scan and see if you get the tell tale blocks indicating the bad sectors (usually red). If your scan starts showing red and slows for a long time, you may want to stop the scan as it could take quite a while. Nero has Scandisc in the CD DVD Speed utility. The free DVDInfoPro has a similar scan tool.

I used Shrink with AnyDVD running in the background, and I ripped both Narnia and King Kong with no problems.

My only problem is burning DL disks. I cant get Nero to recognize the Ricoh media I have. Nero sees it fine if I try to burn something smaller to that disk, but not a dvd9.
I am going to get some Verbatim media and try that.

Normally Ricoh is among the "good stuff". Check the firmware and software settings and let us know if just switching to Verbs was the solution. Also include your burner model as sometimes problems can be specific to a single model of drive.

Ridata's still averaging little better than 50% (after 8 movies), went to newegg and some people raved about em - some said they were garbage. More good than bad tho. Got 100 for 18.99, maybe it's a get what you pay for thing??? Came from newegg w/rebate. Got 19"LCD mon. there for $199 after rebate, works great. 8ms, 650 NP.

I've used a lot of good DVD5 Ricoh, but none of the DL. I've only used Verbs so far with good luck, having the MKM 001 code [Mitsubishi Kagaku Media]. I use DVD5 media and Rebuilder for almost all of my backups. It's so good, I don't see the difference on a 60" TV.

    @brobear

I watch 'em on 35" Samsung true HDTV in BR w/ DTI & +/- prog scan DVD
and 52" Hitachi in LR w/ prog scan Zenith +/- DVD, both thru satellite, so i notice differences as well, one way or another. Throw in the LCD monitor mentioned B4, and I can see or at least should be able to distinguish betwen disks if indeed there is a noticable diffference there.

To dispell the rumor that all memorex is memosux, they actually have media by companies other than CMC. You should try using DVDInfoPro, DVD Identifier or another app to see who the actual manufacturers of the media you use are.

If they were giving awards for pixel counting, I'd insist they send one your way. ;) I'd detract from #1 because you chose a LCD over a CRT monitor. For video reproduction LCDs are good and getting better, but they still don't stack up to a good CRT. As far as brand favorites on TVs I'll not discuss that as the forum is inappropriate. I'll just say we all have our favorites and I don't usually say anything unless I see a real stinker. I don't review TVs and usually do the research prior to buying due to the changes going on with different models. Right now if I was going to buy a big screen, I'd probably go with Mitsubishi or Sony in the 60" range. I'd hate to go smaller now that I'm into big screen. I was thinking about a projector unit.

Just as something to do in researching video output and quality backups try doing a backup using RB and the HC encoder. Then compare the output from CloneDVD 2 to the Rebuilder output and see if you notice the difference. Pay close attention to blurs in action scenes, scenes with flames, such as the flame characters in the fire in Narnia. The bullet sequence in Matrix is another good test. Then there's the "mosquito noise" that transcoders are prone to. For a good test, revisit Return of the King or do King Kong, even transcoders are decent when the compression isn't too high. Things usually start showing and increase past 20%. On compression ratios in software, that's 80% and below. A lot of the big movies will dip well below 60%.

been a while since my last post.

    Brobear.
i used dvdfab decrypter voblanker and then clonedvd i couldnt ask for a better burn than this one and to think it was supose to be the roughest movie to burn. i crack at it and got perfection.

As they say, somebody was pulling your leg. Narnia and King Kong are the 2 easiest releases to backup that I've seen in a while; hardly any copyright protection at all. You know it's easy when the outdated DVD Shrink decryption software handles the rip on King Kong. Bambi II is loaded with copyright protection, but look where it came from (Disney). I got that one for the kids. If a person doesn't have their software updated, that one could be a pain.

I must have missed something...How do you get 2 disc's when you use Any DVD and Shrink to burn a movie. Maybe I'm just slow, but would like to know how if it can be done. Tks

It's a matter of editing. You save what you want on one disc and then save the rest to the second. That's the Reauthor segment of Shrink. I never do it. AnyDVD is just for bypassing encryption and copyright protection. I've used a split disc option with XCopy once just to see how it works. I've never felt the need again. Movie only usually solves the compression problem unless you're recording "Gone With The Wind" or "Lawrence of Arabia".

i thought i'd share my experince, i had anydvd 5.7.2.1 and clonedvd2 2.8.5.1 and all my dvds in the past have backed up fine including narnia but fun with dick and jane didnt.:( but i fianly got the new anydvd 5.9.5.3 and it worked! same with clonedvd2 2.8.9.2 i belive... and i also saw another update yesterday and i reupdated :D... keep it up slysoft and all those ppl that have/had problems i really think anydvd for $29.50 and clnoedvd2 $29.50 pays off no matter what .

i have heard of all those other apps but i never tried them as anydvd and clonedvd2 did them fine. what i like is to do a backup with everything all menus etc etc. on to a single layer disc and retain good quality to the eye . and my dvds read from disc on clonedvd2 about in 20-30 mins then temp dumps it to hd then burn it in 8 mins on an 8x . .... on dvds thtat i dont need to conpress its less then 15 mins. if anyone thinks theirs a better app or a good one to try that is better then anydvd somehow then please suggest so ....

I know this is probably a long way around but I had no problem with King Kong using Shrink however, Narnia was a problem so I just watched it and captured it with Pinnacle, and burned the video from there - no problems.

I know this might sound silly, but I found this way by accident. I wanted to digitize my home movies from VHS tapes, so I bought the cables to run from my vcr/dvd player to my computer (cables not cheap) so I could capture it with Pinnacle on my PC, and one day, a DVD wouldn't copy so I figured if I could do it with a VHS tape I could do it with a DVD - works great!!

Hi brobear, wierd story, yesterday I tried to copy my Fun with Dick & Jane, as usuall I always try my dvdxplat. from xcopy and AnyDvd first, it didnt take, I tried both ways, using the 2 disc way and the compression way, I also tried videovault that came with xcopy and AnyDvd, it mainly takes out all the extra crap, even more so than dvdxplat compression way, that didnt take either, I think here we go again with that sony jargin again, I tought let me give that old trusty dvdxcopy from 321 a shot, whenever it says you have a choice of splitting it on 2 disc's or if you want it can fit on one, I'm usualy leary cause most of the time it doesnt work all the time that way, but this time it did, meaning without compression it did fit on one disk it just took out the extra features, GO FIGURE. that old dvdxcopy still suprises me, to this day I'm still sorry that they were put out of bussiness.
