If your DVD player is able to play DivX files, you can try to trick it. Using a small application inclided in XviD package, named Nic's FourCC changer (a small file named AviC.exe) you can change movie's FourCC codes from XviD to DivX.
If the DVD/DivX player is tricked, you can read XviD files as it does on DivX ones.
Another option comes from Nero. When you burn a Data CD you can select an option (I think in 'Misc') named 'Change the FourCC code of AVI files..' to chane it from XviD to DivX.
Both ways (use of Nic's FourCC chager or choice of a Nero's option) won't change the files at all (and is good, since the quality can never increase. It can only either remain identcal or decrease, when you modify a movie).

The only real valid use of .xvid for an extension would be for a raw Xvid stream. Probably the files are already avi's. Either with the wrong extension or with it hidden; say batman.1x1.ep1.xvid.avi
