Nah, it's relatively safe. All you do is put stuff on the card and put it in your DS. The "stuff" runs and works or it doesn't. You don't have to mess with firmware of the DS or do anything to the DS. If you had to flash the DS or something then there would be risk. Using and R4/M3 is really no risk.
