Put New DVD drive in softmodded xbox

i dont wanna do this yet if its not possible. i beleive that if u do it with a chip, the chip takes care of the details. and i also believe that the bios on a softmodded xbox is retail so if i were to swich dvd drives id get error 17. am i right? if not, whats the answer.
