1066 RAM is better for overclocking, but beyond 400FSB (i.e. 3.4Ghz for a Q9550), 2.00D is still the only multiplier you should use.

Ok... the last (probably) question I have is when will using say 2.20D or 2.40D ever be effective vs 2.00D or 1:1 ratio?

so true... =/ There is a 2.33D and a 2.66D. When will you ever need those?

and I just got 3.6Ghz partially stable (been running prime95 for like an hour so far) I just needed to push my voltage from like 1.25 to around 1.28

Edit: just crashed a 3.6 after about 2 hours with 1.28v. im now trying with 1.3v

    There's no 2.33D either IIRC, just 2.00 or 2.66.

I'm pretty sure it's B. You should be ok up to a good speed with 1.35V, and that's a relatively safe voltage.

Ok. My goal is 3.80ghz, hopefully I can get that with 1.35v cause 1.4v is always risky

Yep.... 3.8ghz just restarted itself after about an hour of prime95 but passed intel burn test. Are there any more settings I could mess around with like ram voltage or something, cause if 1.35v dosent do it then theres gotta be another reason for this

The good news is 2 intel burn tests and the hour or so of prime95 only maxed a 50c so maybe 1.37-1.4v wont be a problem. The noctua fan I got plus the thermal paste and extra scythe fan keep it extra cool.

3.8Ghz is too high for 1.35V, I had to use 1.4V for 3.8Ghz. To be more precise I used 1.43V, but without LLC, so under load it came up as 1.36V.
I haven't got 3.87Ghz (455) stable yet, as I haven't really got beefy enough side fans to cool the northbridge, as that needs lots of extra voltage to make 3.87Ghz, and thus, runs at about 70ÂșC in games, and crashes when it reaches that temperature.

Remember, I'm also using a HAF, and a Thermalright Ultra-120.
    I was using +0.30V MCH, +0.25V FSB, +0.30V RAM and 1.4375Vcore.

I cant seem to get 3.8 stable AT ALL.... Im at 3.5ghz super stable and I think ill just stay there as its still a great overclock (especially since im coming from a 3.00ghz amd dual core) Thanks for all your help. I might try and see if 3.6 is stable in the future but anything higher requires some knowledge I dont yet have.

Well, how hard are you trying? Beyond 3.4Ghz requires an FSB beyond what the motherboard is designed to run, so the Northbridge and Front side bus will need overvolting as well, not just the CPU and RAM.

I never even changed the ram voltage and I dont know what settings to change besides vcore and FSB

Up the G(MCH) voltage to get higher FSBs.

For some reason my computer wont even boot into windows now. Once the black windows logo finishes loading it restarts. I loaded the optimized BIOS settings and then the Fail safe, both giving the same results. Did my overclock damage the system??? this is what I had FSB at 412, vcore at 1.35v and ram at 2.00D... what could the problem be or does 3.5ghz need something more. also take note that one stick of RAM was DOA so it might be the second RAM stick.

Just installed xp on the second HDD and works fine at factory settings. I see some wierd files in the c drive that wouldnt boot, could be just a bad virus. Ill try the overclock tommarow

well I would NEVER try to overclock on a single stick of RAM, let alone a single stick I suspected was faulty - so get that changed as a priority before you push high speeds. 1.35Vcore is ample for a Q9550, right the way up to 3.7-3.8 on most chips. With 2.00D RAM (I assume it's PC8500? PC6400 will struggle from this point on) you're ok at this point, but the MCH will probably need an extra +0.1V, depending on how good your board is it might also need +0.1V on the FSB. For my 3.65Ghz overclock I use +0.20V MCH (+0.20 is the same as 'Auto' on Gigabyte boards) and +0.15V FSB - which is the 'safety limit' for the latter.
