after downloading an old movie i cant get it to play back on my pc. With quicktime i get audio only and with windows media player i get video only. How can i sort this out so that i can burn to dvd or will the burn process fix the problems?

    What extension has the file??

Open the file in a program called AviCodec and tell me what it tells you about the video and audio stream.

It will show what codecs are needed to play the file.

it wont let me open the file with AviCodec. All my other movie files are fine but this one doesnt even appear in my folders when i search with AviCodec.

If you are shy to tell us, tpcdan, we cannot be much help...
Get the freeware Quicktime Alternative (and Real Alternative too) and you will be able to play all these file types in WMP.

In the folder the video file is in (or any other folder as well.

    Click Tools
    Click Folder Options...
    Click View tab
    Advanced settings:
Un-Check > Hide extensions for known file types
    Click Apply
    Click OK

You should now be able to see all extensions and should be able to tell us what the extesion is.

Well it seems registered to Quicktime in your system then...
BTW from your Windows Explorer you can go
Tools> Folder Options> View> and untick 'Hide extensions for known file types' if you really want the full filename.
With QT Alternative, Real Alternative, and WMP with an Internet connection, you should be able to play that file.
As a final solution install FFDShow - then you can play ANYTHING, LoL :)
If your d/l won't play then, who knows WTF is in it, anyway?

???????.mov is the extension when i unclicked the hidden info...thanks for the advice but still cant play it. I've tried using Radvideo but no sound files are there. Still on quicktime it displays audio only. I think the audio files are protected and the only way to do it is to use total recorder then mix the audio into the video with TMPGEncoder. If you know a better way or if you can quick fix the problem i would be very appreciative. Thanks.
