When trying to reencode xvid avi files to dvd with ner vision express 3 or dvd santa the sound is crackily or fuzzy in some spots. I use divx totalpack for codecs and the sound is fine on my computer but isn't on my stand alone dvd players(3).

In what format is the audio in your XviD AVI?
It might be AC3 2.0, but more likely to be MP3.
If MP3, is it CBR or VBR?
The compressed AVI audio should be decompressed into WAV audio (1000-1500MB) and this audio should be used for the DVD. It is what a DVD player calls LPCM audio.
The biggest factor in authoring a compliant DVD is compliance :) LoL
If your DVD is using a re-compressed audio, this will not help your cause.
Funny how something can be technically non-compliant, but will still playback fine on your PC, isn't it?
But making a DVD from an AVI is like making an audio CD from MP3s - it's not a real good plan, and the results are bound to be underwhelming, y'know?
Difficult to be more specific, hope this helps...
    Regards
