Here is the link for your drive, the fw update lists it at 5/25/06 so I would be surprised if yours is current, since they sit on mfr shelves for a while. http://www.liteonit.com/global/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=154 Just what region do you live in and what region is your drive set to? Just what did you install from the installation CD since all you should have done is just plug it in, my Lite-On 1633SX has never needed any installation it is always recognized on any computer, it is thoroughly plug and play.
What does fw stand for exactly? I live in region 1, and my player is set to such. I installed the CD because the manual told me told, it allows me to use the additional features if I ever need them (FILE and DUB). The player is recognized as Plug'n'Play, though
In a nutshell firmware tells the bios how to deal with new media that was not out when the burner was first manufactured. With everyone trying to get into the blank dvd business some use cheaper/ lesser known outside companies to produce their product. Once the company (liteon for example) comes across several different media codes on relatively new discs (i.e. verbatim dvd-r 4x and now verbatim dvd-r 16x) they code differently. Therefore firmware is essentially nothing more than an update like a windows update. Substitute sony where I typed verbatim...big difference in quality between the ones made in taiwan and the ones made in japan. The file and dub on that cd is: file backup where you just click the button on the external burner labeled appropriately and choose file to write on dvd or cd. Same applies for the dub..insert disc (unprotected with this application of course) push dub button, saves to temporary folder, insert blank dvd or cd and puts it on disk. Not really needed unless you just like the push button factor.
I am having the same problem with my Liteon dvd drive. For some reason region 1 dvds load fine, but most all region 2 dvds have trouble loading and make a clicking sound. Most of the time I just have to reinsert the disc, but sometimes it takes quite a few times to be read. Last night I tried for about an hour to get a LOST dvd to load and it never would. kzm007, were you able to solve the problem with the suggestions offered?
Probably because your drive is set to Region 1 and Region 2 won't play in it. Go here and find your burner model and dl the file that will set your drive to region free. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=17
Yes, that was the first problem I had. I do have region free software and both regions play, it just seems like the dvd drive has particular trouble loading a region 2 dvd. Last night was the first time I just couldn't get it to play at all...just kept making the clicking sounds. I've been watching both region 1 and 2 dvds for the last couple of weeks with the region free software with no problems...just the initial clicking with region 2 dvds...
