At one time I had to make a registry change to speed up my DVD drive.
I just installed a HP DVD burner and the read/copy is very slow. I forget where in the registry this information is located in.
I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit.

    1.Open Device Manager.
2.Double click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
3.Double click on either Primary or Secondary IDE Channel, whichever one your drives are on.
4.Then click the Advanced Settings tab.

If it shows your Transfer Mode as "DMA if available" and yet the Current Transfer Mode is only PIO then that's your problem. If so let me know and I'll walk you through the steps to correct it.

I just noticed you're using Vista and I have no idea if the steps I take in XP are right for you.
