I need a program that will allow me to remove (or mute) the words from existing mp3 files. All of the programs I have tried only separate the files into the two stereo tracks, and I can't extract the words (I've also tried filtering out certain bandwiths, and this doesn't work either). HELP!

You can't take vocals completely out of songs. MP3doctor has a utililty to make it "kareoke" and winamp has a plugin to do the same. But none of them completely remove the vocals.

If you're wondering how DJs do it, they ask the record company for the tracks w/o vocals. Some companies are cool and will sell it to you for a small fee.
