This is my second cry from the wilderness. I've been decrypting with DVD Dycrpter and then trying to burn with Shrink DVD and Roxio. Everything seems to go fine until Shrink gets to the burn phase and I get the error message below from a window headed:

    Burn Process Failed at 2.4x (3,324 KB/s)

I'm trying to burn onto Memorex DVD +R 8x Could the media be the problem.

My burner is an older NEC 1100 A which (I believe) can nly burn at 2.4 or 4 x. Could this be the problem. Anyone know if there's a firmware option that might address this (if this is the problem)?

If someone could point me at the right resource or tell me where i'm going wrong I'd really appreciate it.

    TIA Michael

    Error message follows:

If you have a look around this forum you will find that most avoid memorex at all costs, as they do with roxio. Most here burn with nero in conjunction with shrink. You will have to uninstall roxio completely. Have a look in the media section of this forum to find what others use. I use Imation, datawrite, packard bell. Verbatim & Ritek get a good rep.
You have to experiment with media. Also burn to a max of 4X. If you try to burn faster you run the risk of write errors.
Here is a link for the Roxio Zapper. This is VITAL in order that you remove ALL files & registry changes. Everyone uses this Zapper.

    http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.me...www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip

Hope this was of some help. PS, welcome to our club. You will no doubt learn & contribute to our wealth of information!

    Kind Regards,

Two things I would do if it were me.
Get better quality media such as TDK, Maxell, TY, Sony, Verbatim and the list goes on.
I would also get rid of Roxio and replace it with Nero.

You should remove your Nero key from the top of your thread.

    It begins with 1A23......

By the way, shink does not burn, only compresses!! Roxio or decrypter burns!

Also have you de-fragged lately? or disc clean up? Do you turn off your anti-virus? Are you multi-tasking your PC whilst burning?
I also noticed in you log that there was a "Power calibration error". this is an indication of bad media, or that your burner is on its' last legs!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome and quick response. I have indeed learned a lot from this "club" already and look forward to much much more.

I was in fact burning with Nero. The reference to Roxio in the original post was my error. I do have Roxio on my machine and will remove it. I also just updated my Nero version so with luck this will help.

Equally I'll shut down my anti-virus and not multi task next time I burn (attempt to burn).

As far as media goes, I've noticed here the comment that brand names don't count for much as the labels contract out the manufacture to other companies. Do I take it then that Memorex consistently buys from poor quality suppliers?

    Thanks again.

The original Memorex was good, but they changed manufacturer's and they have gone down hill ever since.
Most users here steer clear of them and tend to use the better quality discs, which from time to time will throw a bad one, but nothing like Memorex.

Well I took action and tried deleting my Roxio with the zapper tool.

The tool wouldn't work because it said the burn engine was in use.

So I removed Roxio the old fashioned Add/Remove way.

Tried using the zapper then to search for any reg. vestigal reminants etc. Didn't run.

So I removed Nero as well.

Now I can't access either of my dvd drives.

Device manager says they are there and working properly. Which is good 'cause I can see 'em :)

The Add/Remove hardware Wizard tells me that:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

So obviously I've deleted the wrong something. Any idea what that might be and how I'd reinstall it without the aid of my cd/dvd drives. I do have a floppy and Norton "unerase".

    Again. TIA

Thinking that the problem might have to do with the ASPI layer which appears to have disappeared I downloaded 4.6 and installed it per the instructions on Dell support. but I'm getting no joy with my dvd drives.????

The clean tools recommended in other places on this site don't seem to have worked for me.

Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

    Again TIA Michael

    I would reinstall Nero.

Nero has a tool that will check out your ASPI for you. In the Nero folder's, it's in the "Toolkit" folder, and is entitled "Nero Info Tool". It has an "ASPI" tab. When you click on it, there is a pull-down menu, with one option for "System ASPI" and the other for "Nero ASPI."

In your original post, you said you were trying to burn with Roxio. It doesn't look like it, because you posted a Nero error log. Shrink uses Nero to burn (unless you opt for decrypter). As for Roxio, the usual prejudice you get from people around here should apply only to Easy CD [bold]Creator[/bold]. Roxio has a different product, Roxio Easy DVD [bold]Copy[/bold] which is pretty good.

As for the Memorex media, the blanket condemnation is also inappropriate. It depends on the manufacturer. I'm using Memorex's with a PRODISC id, and they are better than the Maxell's with a RITEK id, at least for me.

I've been using Roxio Basic for over a year and haven't had any problems. I don't use shrink to burn my disk. I burn the disk from the hdd using disk creator. I move the Video_ts folder and copy it just like any other normal files. I've had no problems. Any errors are due to bad burns by the DVD burner or bad media which I've had. I just replaced my dvd burner because it was creating too many coasters. Now my bad burns are gone.

    hi guys...

i skipped most so please forgive, but its getting a long thread.....

ok you only need 2 free amamzing apps!

rip with dvd decrypter in iso mode and load the iso to dvd shrink to compress / re-author, and set shrink to use either dvd decrypter engine or nero engine to burn!

    done easy...

    Thanks for this morning's posts.

I've reinstalled Nero 6.6 and using Nero's tools I see both the 4.6 ASPI and the Nero ASPI installed and working.

Unfortunately my system is still unable to detect my cd/dvd devices.

Any suggestions as to what I may need to reistall to make things work again would be most appreciated.

Yes, bazilla, I was in error when I referenced Roxio in my initial post. I was in fact using Nero. something not picked up on by the mod? who changed the thread header :)

    Again TIA one and all.

Well thanks for the uninstall suggestions. Tried 'em both but I'm still not able to access the devices. The device manager is giving me a message that says:

Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

    Help :) Thanks Michael
