First posted this in the advanced forum by accident so i moved it to the newbie forum. I have burned over 1000 Verbatim DVD-R's with no problem with my old NEC ND-2500. I recently updated my system with a faster chip, more RAm and a Samsung SH-S223Q and 2 coasters right off the bat. The first burn was lightning fast, then about 3 minutes in, it said could not burn, error. Before the second burn, i went into properties and lowered to speed down to 16x, the second disk burned in 5 minutes, but when I took it out and popped it into my DVD player to test, the plaer said "no play". I burned another disk, same thing, super fast, noprobs but when I tested it, "no play". What is up? I am using DVD Fab Platinum 5. I have used it with my old NEC for a year with 0 coasters. I just lowered the speed to 8x and an error came up. I downloaded the firmware from Samsung from Nov. 24 and when i tried to run it, it said I did not have the proper drive to do it.
What firmware do you currently have? Here is a site that has a firmware update for your drive: Link Here is another site: Link Here is the samsung page with drivers as well: Link
yeh, that is the firmware i downloaded but I ran the "Wininquiry" to find I needed the "SB" firmware. Burned a disk at 8x and all seems well but I wonder if there is a quality diff. in 4x v.s. 8x burns? Anyone got any exp. on that matter.
Generally what you want to do when burning a DVD movie is to burn at half the speed of the burner. If your DVD burner is 16x then you want to burn at 8x or slower.
Cool, thanks for the info. I really like the 8x, fast and good quality. I think the Sammy is 22x or something.
joegeek I notice you are getting a lot of info about firmware updates. As long as you are using the very best blank media, I have found that firmware updates are almost useless. I only use Verbatim 16X DVD+R and Verbatim 2.4X DVD+R Dual Layer, White Inkjet Printable media. The secret is the fact that both media that I use are Verbatim DVD+R blanks. I can't remember when I last burnt a coaster. Eric
joegeek I did forget to mention something. Although my Samsung and Plextor DVD Burners are capable of burning at much faster speeds, I always burn the 16X blanks at 6X speed and the 2.4X - 6X Dual Layers at 4X. Eric
I will disagree with you. If you don't update your firmware, and your burner's firmware will not have the proper strategies to write on the newer media, then the best quality media will make you some of the best quality coasters that will serve the exact same purpose as a coaster made of the lowest, crappiest grade discs.
I see you fixed your problem...and the firmware being up to date does matter... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/732387
@syxguns, Don't you love it when people talk out of their arses, and give advise that has no reality base(like "firmware ain't worth a fudge"!) ? Brand new burner, out of the box,it doesn't matter, you put it in, check the firmware. It could've been sitting on the shelf for months...Hopefully we all learned something. Happy Holidays!
cyprusrom, Many people are like that. It's the ones that have been here teaching the newbies how to update, burn, rip, etc. that gave them what little knowledge they have! Happy Holidays to you and your family in this 2008 season of joy!
yeh, ditto on the firmware. I just pulled my new HP notebook out of the box and figured it was good to go...4 hours later of pulling my hair out with Vista, I need 3 downloads to make it run up to snuff. Thanks again to all and have a merry Christmas.
