I have a drw-500 and just noticed something today. I had recorded two - hour long shows on a DVD+RW in SP mode and it said I had 22 minutes left to record in SP mode. I watched the first show and then deleted it. It still said I only had 22 minutes left to record on. Shouldn't the deleted hour have been available to record on also? I thought it might just be a mistake so I tried to record another hour show but it cut off after 22 minutes. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi Yukon........ Guess a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do! Hope you are satisfied with the new machine and all goes well for you. Walmart is usually pretty good about refunds/returns so I feel confident they will work with you.. The 500, with all its minor quirks, satisfies all my needs right now so I will hang with it at least until I can go "big time" on something else. Keep us informed and Good Luck on the new one. Jerry
Hi smokey! Welcome aboard.. Once you "delete" a chapter/title, the space is gone. At least until you "erase/format" the entire disk, then you will regain all of the space. If you want to hang on to the other show for a while you could change your recording mode to a longer one and have more space to record on (LP, EP, EP+). If it is something you want to add to your library you could record it to a vcr and then back to dvd. Don't forget; formatting makes a brand new disc and everything on it is gone; but you get your space back. If there is anything I can help with, give me a shout. Good Luck Jerry
Thanks Usafret. I was just wondering because with the Cyberhome recorder that I had before, I could delete the first hour long title and then record another hour long show in its slot right away without formatting and still keep the second show. That recorder was much easier to use and had many more features than my sanyo. If only it hadn't stopped working!
Hi Smoke and use, I am the proud owner of a DVR 500 and thought I would share a couple of observations and questions. I noticed that if you format a DVD +RW before recording, you can then delete some of your recordings (assuming you have more than 1 recording on your DVD) and then get your space back. If you do not format your DVD before recording, oddly enough you have to erase everything to get your space back. Couple of questions: 1. Anyone know what the difference is between erase and format (other than the difference I observed) 2. After useing a DVD +RW a couple of times (erasing the DVD between recordings) I noticed that the DVD starts to skip in a big way. I also see some segments from the old recording, mixed with the new recording as if the DVD was not erased properly! 3. I hear some squeeky noises coming from the sanyo unit when the power is on. The unit works ok for now but is this a sign of trouble? Thanks everone. Regards, Pep

help! my dvd rw500 records fine, but only plays back in dvd players connected to the tv and not to the computer
Maxicat, how are you doing it when you try to play them on the PC ? You'll need some kind of DVD playing software installed to play them as regular DVD's,otherwise they will just open up as data discs.(Folders and files etc) If you dont have one installed, there should be planty of free/trial software DVD players available online, but make sure you get one that does not have built in adware !!
Hi Cult-- and Maxicat Just saw the post by both of you...... Remember I had that problem with some of the dvd's and you referred me to the HP brand.........They work great. Later folks......Jerry
i do have a dvd player installed in the computer already, and the Melody disc it came with doesn't work on any of my 3 computers dvd players. I finalized the memorex dvd-r, and when i try and play it, it says region not matched, i'll buy the hp discs though thanx, for the suggestions
umm Cult, what do you mean, do i have to install a different kind of dvd player, cause now i am using nero media player, so if I do can you post a link please ~thanx
Maxi, you can buy better discs than the HP's at supermediastore.com I can't understand why it is giving you a region code error message,as home made DVD's have no region code, hence they are region-free,and should play in all players/drives.Then again,it could be the lack of a region code that the software dosent like,or the way the disc's file system is structured. Try download.com,there are several players there for free, although i dont know if you will find one without adware built in to it.You can try one of the trial ones, which requires purchase after a trial period, but there are ways round that so you can get it for free. Also,it may be worthwhile starting a new thread in this forum and in www.videohelp.com forum, and ask the question about what software is good for playing home-made discs,as opposed to pre-recorded discs. You should get a better response if you start a topic with a specific question.Head the topic something like "Playing home-made DVD on PC.What software works?" And then describe your problem.More people will see it,and you'll have more chance of a reply than if you asked the question within this section alone. good luck ( and Hi Fret !)
Hi Max---------- The dvd program that came with my computer (Dell) had not been set up properly for the Region.. Check the program that plays your dvd's and be sure it is set for America (USA)------------I think it is Region 1. But, like I said before, my computer would not recognize any type dvd (except those rented/purchased) until Cult told me to try the HP brand; that's the only brand I use now.. Hope this info helps.. Jerry
thanx so much , and how do you set up the region on your dvd playerm and which writing speed should i use
Hi Max.. Just saw your last post.. The drw500 itself is already programmed for Region 1 so you can't change that. You need to set up your computer software for Region 1 as well. Sanyo customer service recommends using any speed UP TO 4x (that does not mean higher speed would not work but I was curious also and that is their advise and 4x is what I use.) I agree with Cult, there probably are better brands than HP, but after he put me on the HP it worked with my computer and I have not had a single problem with the drw500 nor the computer since. You said you already had a dvd player program on your computer so my suggestion is that you ensure that it is set up right (mabbe try a commercial/rental movie on it) and give the HP a try. Also, as a suggestion from my own experience, get you a few DVD-RW's to do all this experimenting with. I went through about 50 dvd-r's that I had to trash before I wised up. Good Luck to you and I will keep an eye on this site so feel free to ask away if you have more questions. I will help any way that I can. Jerry
Fret,Just to clarify though that the 500 does not set a region code on discs that it records. It makes region-free discs,as do all other recorders. You are right when you say it is set for region 1 but that is on playback, and will affect store-bought discs only !!
DON'T HIT ME CULT!! (smile) I was trying to answer Max' question as to how he sets the Region on his dvd (I assumed he was speaking of his 500)by telling him he couldn't. BUT, if someone in Irag were to make him a VIDEO DVD on a computer and had their computer software program set to another Region, he could not play it----right?? (Without changing his computer software to that particular region.) I'm just going by what sanyo customer service said. They also said you could occasionaly get a store bought one that was defective and it would give you that error. Of course they always sound like they are telling you anything to get you off the phone... [bold]Remember, I am only as smart on this 500 as YOU taught me to be!! (smile)[/bold] Go ahead, make my day.
so what speed of disc should i use cause i tried memorex 8x sony 4x and the melody that came with it, and none of them work on the computer, on two of my computers it doesn't even read the discs and on the other one it says region not matched
Hi Max...........I'm at a loss for words right now........Not sure I understand where you are having a problem... See if this is correct: 1. You record something on the 500 and it plays back ok on the 500. 2. You put it in your dvd drive on a computer, your dvd player program starts, but you get an error message 3. Or you put it in your dvd drive on a computer and you get no response. If this is correct, give me the name of the software that you are using for playing dvd's on your computer. I will try to take it from there....... Jerry
