Can I buy a ATA external HDD and use it on a copmuter that has an SATA HDD. I want to copy music from a computer that has ATA to a HDD and play it on a computer that supports SATA. I know the connection of the external will be firewire. I don't see why I couldn't do this but want to save the headache for something else.

Your MB will have both SATA and IDE since your DVD/CD devices are IDE. Second, you are using an external device though firewire or even USB, so no problem.

Thanks. That is what I thought but I wanted to make sure before I sent a ATA drive to my Bro and had him copy all that music and only to get it back and I couldn't use it.
