So I am going to be disc scanning, moving data around and formatting some my 3 or 4 hard drives.

My question is is there is a better disc checker than what comes with win 7? And should I scandisc before I move gigs of data?

Getting a 3TB drive in and will use it as a archive drive, I tend to fill new HDs to the bring a couple times and format to give them a good test before I make any final moves.

When you do the copying use teracopy. It verifies the copy. I would cut and paste vs copy when you do. If something does not copy correctly it will be easy to find. Otherwise it is a real pain! I have done this before but I didn't scan my disks.

I would scan the disks for errors but I wouldn't defrag. Even if it is fragmented, the new disks will not be. My guess is, even if it is fragmented, you will not get back the time investment.
