Should it take this long?

Hey there! I've been lurking here for a few weeks, but cant seem to find the answer to this. I have had luck copying DVD's - home movie type and a 2-3 hour dvd takes about 20 minutes to copy and burn.

I am now making a movie - about 3 hours worth of stuff from youtube - it is taking about 4 hours to transcode and burn. I just wanted to see if i could change anything to speed this up a bit or if that is about what I should expect. Also the last time I tried to burn it went through the whole thing and said burning was successful, but there was nothing on my dvd. Is there anything I can do to prevent from having to go through the entire 4 hours again?

I have a lenovo thinkpad r61i with Intel core 2 duo processor, 3GB Ram, Win XP Pro, and I am using the Roxio WinDVD creator that came with the system. I will upgrade this eventually, but for now it's what i have. I also have a copy of ulead Video Studio 9 that came with my burner but the reviews aren't that great so I havent bothered with it. Thanks in advance!!

Taking four hours to encode three hours (running time) is not unusual.
I don't know 'Roxio WinDVD creator' or if it saves it's output before burning, but I would suggest you try the likes of 'DVD Flick' to encode the files.
Set your preferences to NTSC video (North America) or PAL (everywhere else) for the output then decide if you wish burn the DVD immediately after encoding.
You can add multiple titles (files)and if you choose to have a menu, each title will be allocated a menu choice.
I suggest you not burn immediately and instead check the output folder and verify that the files play ok with your media player.

If the files are ok, run 'IMGBurn' set at 4x on 'Verbatim' or other reliable media and burn the 'VIDEO_TS' folder from DVD Flick.

If you wish, IMGBurn has a 'test' feature that will simulate the burn without actually writing to disk - it's a good test of disk quality.

    DVD Flick.

IMGBurn, from the boot screen choose 'Write files/folders to disc'.

Thanks for all the info! I will definitely try those programs. 4 hours is just a very long time for this computer - there are 4 of us using it, and 4 hours just gets in the way! I guess we just have to get used to it, start it before going to bed or something. Thanks so much!!

lwalker dvd shrink will work with Vista you just have to set it up to work with Vista. right click the dvd shrink icon on your desktop and click "Properties" go to "Compatibly Mode" and click Vista. or you can use clonedvd + anydvd or dvdfab platinum which is in my thread John posted.

    Dvd692008

I really appreciate your help, andI have been trying to follow your instructions but here is what happens:
I do the compatibility thing and put in windows 95 and hit apply and it starts to down load and stops and tell me it stopped because DEP closed it”
It says go to “systems” and click”advanced systems and then click “preferences” and click on Date Protection and turn it on except for dvd shrink.
I do this and go to open and run the program and it continues to stop telling me it is closed becauseof DEP
Here is what it says about DEP

you choose to protect all programs, you can still turn off DEP for individual programs. If you suspect that a program does not run correctly when DEP is turned on, check for a DEP-compatible version of the program or an update from the software publisher before you change any DEP settings.
    1. Click to open System.
    2. Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    3. Under Performance, click Settings.
    4. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
To turn off DEP for an individual program
To turn on DEP for an individual program

Can you help me with this.I sure thank you

lwalker is Desperate Housewife on DVD ? there is freeware but its a pain in the butt to use and most people don't have much success with it but you can give it a go. most of the programs that have free trails only let you convert like 5 mins of the DVD you are wanting to convert. the only two i recommend using are CloneDVDmoblie from sly soft or dvdfab platinum BOTH have unlimited free trials

    http://www.dvdfab.com/index.htm

you can find the freeware programs in the I-Pod forum
