    Good to know thanks.

Where can I pick up reasonably priced 800's? Might test the system first using DM500s and then invest in the 800

Can I play avi's on the 800 or is this a separate issue??

    and eh's what EPG??

Basic questions but the answers aint easy. Its all about what YOU want. I bought a clone DM800 at linuxsat.co.uk (good people) but its a clone. So they will supply cheap solution but it is a clone. What this means is that support for the unit is limited. Do I like the DM800? Its a fantastic box but I would have love a box with multiple tuner options. Hence the DM8000 at Sterling 900. This box is overpriced.

EPG (electronic program guide) or in laymans terms your TV guide for the week.

What kills me about the DM800 is when I want to recored to my external hard disk I can only watch channels on the same trasnponder as the current recorded program. But it does HD and it allows Nabilo 0.11 image which to be honest is just fantastic. And for all that its the same size as the DM500

Oh right so does that mean if you're recording off sky 1 you can still watch sky sports but you couldnt watch something off a different signal??

Ya reckon I might go with the DM800 clone, a bit more expensive box than the 500 but I guess it's worth it.

DM800 clone ok. If your a serious linux freak then suggest you go with genuine box rather than clone. I love what these boxes do and would consider myself well educated in linux issues. Once again do what you want. Spend time at this game or not. If you like the buzz go for the real thing. It may cost 350eur but well worth it and you dont live with the frustration of a clone. simple example. wanted to use smargo external card reader but couldnt. kernel software did not support it. find clone is a great box but frustrating

Ya I do like tinkering with the linux side of things but with going for planning and all my little side projects I'm not sure if I'd have the time for experimenting.

I do think being able to use seperate card readers might save you in the long run if they bring out new cards and that maybe?

Thanks for the advice anyways, hopefully I'll get the second 500 Monday and set it up, I'm sure I'll have a few more questions then! :D

hi guys im looking for a little help with portforwarding so my dm500s can act as a server(i know its not ideal i will upgrade to a better dreambox in the near future) i flashed the 2 dm500s with nabilosat darkstar 11,i installed cccam 2.1.3,i got my boxkey, and made a new config file which i ftpd in to var/etc. so the card works in both boxes for all channels, and edited cccam.cfg and put in flines and clines. on the server box i press yellow, scroll down to nabilo cccam info and press ok,scroll to shares and i see 1 share. i do the same with the other box only on this box i scroll to servers and i see 1 server thats offline and 0 cards. so the next part is portforwarding, first part is setting my laptop with a static ip(i have done this)the other part is setting the router to portforward. i have read what i could on this, i printed off instructions on setting both pc and router(as i say the pc is set ok)the instructions said type in the router ip in the internet search bar(i did this) the instructions said i would see a box saying enter network password and then i would see the router menu. i get only the eircom broadband home page. my router is netopia 2247-01 and im on eircom broadband,if anyone has this router and can help me to set it for portforwarding it would be great. i know on the eircom broadand home page i can select configure and expert settings and there is a portforwarding section, but i need a little help on this as im not sure if is the same as in the instructions i printed off. thanks in advance for any help.

hi guys im looking for a little help with portforwarding so my dm500s can act as a server(i know its not ideal i will upgrade to a better dreambox in the near future) i flashed the 2 dm500s with nabilosat darkstar 11,i installed cccam 2.1.3,i got my boxkey, and made a new config file which i ftpd in to var/etc. so the card works in both boxes for all channels, and edited cccam.cfg and put in flines and clines. on the server box i press yellow, scroll down to nabilo cccam info and press ok,scroll to shares and i see 1 share. i do the same with the other box only on this box i scroll to servers and i see 1 server thats offline and 0 cards. so the next part is portforwarding, first part is setting my laptop with a static ip(i have done this)

?????? Why do you need your laptop to have a static IP. You need your dreambox to have a atatic IP behind your router

the other part is setting the router to portforward. i have read what i could on this, i printed off instructions on setting both pc and router(as i say the pc is set ok)the instructions said type in the router ip

Assume you get router login page here!!!!

in the internet search bar(i did this) the instructions said i would see a box saying enter network password and then i would see the router menu. i get only the eircom broadband home page. my router is netopia 2247-01

You need to ggogle default username and password for this router. If you are allowed direct acess to the home page it should be asn easy matter of finding how to port forward

and im on eircom broadband,if anyone has this router and can help me to set it for portforwarding it would be great. i know on the eircom broadand home page i can select configure and expert settings and there is a portforwarding section

In terms of port forwarding it depends on what you want to do. Do you want to cs, do youu want to FTP do you want to telnet.

Have you a static IP for your eircom broadband. If not have you set up an account on dyndns. If not why? Lets take this a bit at a time

, but i need a little help on this as im not sure if is the same as in the instructions i printed off. thanks in advance for any help.

    Eircom Router???

You'll be needing a new router, I couldn't PF on my router, had to buy a netgear that works solidly.

so with the netopia router i cant setup a cardshare in my own house, nor can i share(as a server) with anyone out side the house if i wanted to. so if i get another suitable router i can do both. ive read about as many posts and threads as my eyes would let me and never saw a mention of possible problems with certain routers, so after many hours reading up and learning and quite a few euro im still not near where i want to get. please recommend a few suitable router models such as the netgear above and i will look around for one.

I couldn't port forward with the Netopia over the course of a weeks work, infact I couldn't even connect to other clients at all with it.

I put the Netgear router in and within 30 minutes I was up and running.

if you have itv and bbc your dish is pointed to 28 degrees east(the sky satellite)those channels are not available alsewhere. your dm500 might not have all the frequencies. i had to add quite a few to mine but its easy, you will find all freguencies and channels here. http://flysat.com/28east.php press menu and then setup, then service searching, then transponder edit. choose eurobird/astra 28 east and press the right arrow button, press the right arrow button again and add should be highlighted in red, press ok to add. (type in additional frequencies with the remote)save all new frequencies and go back and do an auto scan. you should have all your channels now.
