Packet writing software.... Is packet writing software considered software that writes DvD's only? Does Easy CD creator 5 write packets? What are the Adaptic titles that I should be looking for? Just don't want to screw up my existing Dru 510a firmware by updating improperly...Thanks for your collective knowledge response....:~)
Packet writing software refers to those programs like DLA that allow you to treat your CD or DVD drive like a hard drive so that you can drag and drop files (You also have to format the drive for these programs). I installed DSS by simply disabling DLA (and the Microsoft equivalent program that comes with XP) rather than uninstalling DLA and DSS installed OK. DSS allows you to copy a 4.7GB single file DVD backup to a hard drive in about 8 minutes but will not speed up copying many files back to the hard drive. I have not found DSS to help appreciably when using "DVD Shrink" (free software for copying DVD movies).
Please define DLA and where and how it is disabled, and what and where is the equivalent program that comes with XP that is to be disabled as well...I also need to install the firmware update, so I would like to know exactly the proceedure to follow in laymans terms...Sorry to be such a neofite....
DLA is a packet writing program that comes with HP burners and maybe with some other burners too (I have seen it with DVD burner, I think it comes with CD burners as well). With this software you can drag and drop whatever you want to put on a disk. To disable this software, open My Computer, right click your burner drive, choose Properties, select the DLA tab and click Disable. If you have no DLA tab in Properties of your burner drive, it means the DLA program is not installed on your computer, so you do not have to bother disabling it
I have checked all 4 of my drives as you have discribed and found no "DLA" tabs in any of them...However, I did find a tab in my cc drive that had a DirectCD 5.0 options tab but when opened did not have a disable or any reference to "DLA" in it.... The only software that I have on my hdd is Nero 6, Roxio Easy CD creator 5 that I guess may be in question?...Would these two programs need to be uninstalled in order to apply the firmware update 1.od? Thank you again for your patience in answering my questions.....:~)

Uninstall Roxio, Adaptec and Nero products. Make sure you have the Install Package to reinstall them and make sure you have a Serial number.
In XP the tab is like I said earlier about DLA, just named "Recording" instead of "DLA", and it is present for all CD and DVD burning drives. Unlike DLA, it is not a separate program, it is a part of Windows XP. A checkbox that you enable/disable is entitled "Enable CD recording on this drive". Hope this info helps.
I didn't disable my built-in XP stuff and it works fine. Since you'll be installing your hardware to the Operating System, the Operating System will know what to do. This is not the case with Roxio Adaptec and Nero...they don't know that you just installed a new drive.
Besides reading/preparing a disk with the Sony Dru drive, can anybody here tell me at what speeds they can read a 4.7g movie with their 16xDVD-ROM drives?(of course if you have one available) Reading with my dvd-rom drive on a single 4.7g movie takes me about 30-35 mins (2x's)...is that normal??
I have a 500A with firmware version 2.0G. Does anybody know if there's a way to use DSS so I can also speed up the reading of my DVD's? Thanx in advance! Dawnage.
DSS uses the constant angular velocity or CAV mode that allows The 510A drive to read data faster near the rim of the DVD than the (normal)constant linear velocity CLV mode would otherwise allow. If DSS is running in "overdrive" you can read full DVDs containing one (or a few files) in about 8 minutes. If you have a DVD containing many files (e.g. 1000), overdrive will not provide any read speed advantage over the "normal" DSS mode. The best way to tell if DSS is working properly is to write a single large file to the DVD and then measure how fast it can be read in "overdrive". As I mentioned above, DSS did not appear to offer a significant advantage using "DVD Shrink" to copy movies. Sometimes DSS helps, sometimes it does not.
Thanks for the info upintheheaa. It was really helpful to me. I had the problem about burning a CD-R to CD-R, it took me 20 minutes to do it and now it takes around 5 minutes. Thanks again.
