I have a mac system os X 10.3 G3. I have a dual layer dvd burner and am looking for software that will copy css encrypted dvd's for the mac. It is a Sony dual layer burner and not an apple super drive.

Could anyone steer me the right way.

To answer the first part of your question, the best software (and free!) is MacTheRipper, available by download from ripdifferent.Extremely easy to use. (Others are Yade X and OSeX but I can't fathom their correct use and I have never been able to burn their output).

As for burning, how to you intend outputing from the computer first of all? Does the G3 have a DV out connector? As I recall, the drive of a G3 doesn't even burn CDs, and even my G5 can't output to an external burner!

I have an external Sony dual layer dvd burner that burns 8.5gb and works through my firewire. It works good but is not an Apple super drive. Do I need Apple's superdrive to use Mac the Ripper? I use Toast 6 for the actual burn but need the rip software. I don't think I need a compression software because I have DVD+R DL which holds 8.5mb. Do I need the DVD-R discs or will the DVD+R DL work also?

    Thanks,
    James

MacThe Ripper senses as soon as a DVD disc is put in the computer and the drive whirrs. You then select whether full disc extraction or movie. Always choose full disc. The problem here is, will it 'sense' the DVD in the external recorder?. It only reads from a disc so it's no use copying the disc to your desktop first.
Go to ripdifferent.com which hosts MacThe Ripper and download 2.6.6 for free and try it. (WiseWeasel at this site is one of the developers and great at answering questions if you get stuck.)
If it does automatically read from the external burner, then choose Desktop from the Menu (the Save To is the only Menu item). What software are you using as the burn engine sending it to your external burner.

Thanks for your help. I have an internal dvd drive also. I tried mac the ripper and made sure the region code was 1 for N. America and then used toast 6 in the data tab and put the files VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS files in there and but a 8.5gb DVD+DL in my dvd burner. One error occured at the end but I continued and it seems to work pretty good. I dont have to compress anything since I use the 8.5gb disc. I will let you know the error that I get. I just can't remember what it says right now.

But thanks for all your help,
    Vatum
