In another thread, some poor fellow bought a copy of DVD X Copy from someone off eBay. Not knowing the company had gone out of business, he tried to activate it. Naturally it didn't work and he's out of his money.

A few years ago, I bought DVD X Copy Platinum and installed it. But when I got a new computer and tried installing it, I ran into the same problem. It wouldn't activate and it wouldn't work.

I don't mind registering my product and not passing it around for friends to make copies of, but I don't want to end up with the same problem again. With the economy still headed south and the value of the dollar about to plunge, I don't want to buy a program that requires activation to install and to function. I don't mind getting a special "key" once I register it, but I don't want another dead program.

The manufacturer of DVD X Copy could have released a crack or key of some sort that would allow their program to install and work, but they left their customers hanging in the wind. That's why I'm not buying their product now.

Just checked out DVD Cloner VI and it has the same type of activation. Can someone save me some time and point me to a decent DVD copy program that's not dependent on the Internet before it will work? I've heard a lot of good things about DVD Fab, but there are a lot of "comparison" scams out there that pretend to compare various products and, of course, they give the edge to their product while trying to look objective. So I need some way of cutting through the hype.

Thanks for any help. Boards like this are great!

I don't believe that 3-2-1 Studios had a chance to release any kind of crack, since they were being watched, all of the time, before, and after they were brought down by the lawsuit, which ended their business in 2004.

As for the rest, YOU need to wade through whatever you think is hype, and make a decision on what to get.

    What Grandpa said.

jriler, I understand your frustration and you probably don't care, but 1-2-3 studios had no chance to do anything for their customers since they were virtually "sued out of existence". They were kind enough to leave the activation servers up for a period of time after they ceased operations (I owned the product priot to and through the shutdown).

What's wrong with AnyDVD and CloneDVD????? I have been using them for a couple of years and I am very happy with them. Software like that I don't mind (happily) paying for. I know that then new licensing structure has a few people upset, but I think there's still time to get in on "lifetime" support.

I'm not "shilling". I used to use the freeware like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, et. al, but that was before I became a single parent and have "less than zero" free time to pursue my projects.

    Just my .02
