Some avi files slow/stutter - others play fine

I have searched through the forum, and while I have found some threads that may be related to the same issue, none seem to describe the same issues, nor did any supply a solution to this problem.

The issue is with the playing of avi files, though not all of them. Size does not appear to be the determining factor.

Up until this past week, all avi files played normally, regardless of the player used. Now, certain avi files slow down, almost in a stutter, when they are played back. If the file is allowed to play once in the player and then replayed, it does play at normal speed. I have tried playing those files in WMP, RP and DivX Player, with the same result. When played in VLC, the files play normally.

As noted, not all avi files perform in this manner. Some of them will play normally in whichever player I use.

GSpot gives the following information about one of the avi files which plays slow and stutters:

... and the following for one of the avi files which plays normally:

FWIW, the location of the file (Hard Drive versus USB Drive) appears to have no factor in this issue.

Because the files will play normally is allowed one pass through the player, I thought this might be a buffer situation, but that would not explain why other files, of similar or longer lengths, play as they should when first accessed. I did try increasing the buffer in WMP by several increments from 2 to 120 seconds. There was only minimal improvement.

    Any suggestions are most welcome.

Well according to Gspot, the files that play OK are the very common,
Divx/mp3 type, while the other uses PCM audio (not a problem normally)
and a codec (top right on Gspot) that I don't recognize at all.

What is the source of this file?

Here's one I did, when you click on the "1" under MS A/V (lower left)
do you get the same list of filters ?

There shouldn't be any difficulty, since it's uncompressed.

    Hi dave -

Thanks for getting back. That part reads "Unable to render video" on all the avis that are not reading properly. The ones that are working fine all show a sequence similar to the one you show.

    Thanks again.

    Download Filmerit. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Filmerit.htm

Use it to see if you have any errors in the DirectShow filters.

The only filters involved, are "avi splitter" and "color space converter" - in fact, for the RGB type uncompressed files, you should
be able to draw this simple graph and render the file in MS' Graphedt.

    Hi davexnet -

Thanks so much for your help.

I ran Filmerit. There were some errors and I was able to repair them.
Unfortunately, it didn't have an effect on those avi files.

Would you have any other suggestions?

    Try issuing this command :
    regsvr32 \windows\system32\quartz.dll
    this will register the server.

    reboot and retry.

    That didn't work either.

I played one of the files in VLC and got the following information.

FWIW, I checked most of the files to verify that the ones which cannot be viewed normally are all uncompressed files.

I have also been googling and checking other sites, but so far, I haven't found a comparable problem.

I appreciate your time and effort in helping sort through this problem.

Well download MS' Graphedt and attempt to build the
filter graph as I have done. You'll find the filters under
    graph/insert filters/directshow.

The first is called file source (async), the others are named
as you see them. To join the filters, click on the pin and drag.

    What is the result ?

    Hi davexnet -

Okay, this is what happens when I render the media file through GraphEdit on its own:

When I attempt to build the graph manually, after I add the avi splitter filter and attempt to connect the source box to the splitter box, this is the result:

    Thanks.

I did a file search for "split" on my Hard Drive and found this: AviSplitter.ax

Not sure where it came from, but I unregistered, and the files seem to be playing correctly now.

    Fingers crossed.

davexnet - thanks so much for your time and patience.

Just to clarify the post above, the "AviSplitter.ax" file was not located in the system32 folder, but rather in its own folder.
A quick Google search shows that it is included in several codec packs, but this was not part of one.

You're welcome - glad you found it, 'cause the next step would have been
to start digging in the registry !
