I don't normally have a problem converting avi files to mpegs but some avi files won't even open in TMPGenc and it says "cannot open avi file or is not supported". Is there another way around this?
    Many Thanks

There are 2 things you can try. if the first one works then just forget the second.

click option - environmental settings. Click the "vfapi plug-in" tab and look for directshow on the list. right click it and give it a higher priority. do this until its priority is at about 2 or so. then try and open the file. If it doesn't then change the priority back. If that doesnt work try this..

open the avi in virtualdub. click video - direct stream copy. click audio - full processing mode. click audio again and click compression. select no compression pcm and click ok. now click file - save avi. the avi will be larger in size than the original but the file has a better chance of loading in to TMPGEnc now!
