I recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 on my PC and certain programs like Alcohol 120, DVD Decrypter, Nero, and other programs related to burning have all failed to start when i try and open the application. Also one game called War Rock doesn't work anymore either.
if anyone has a solution please help!

    Sounds like a virus.
Did you try a virus scan?

Also, try using System File Checker (SFC) from
Start -> Run -> "sfc /scannow" (without quotes)

If nothing else works, you could also try a Windows XP repair install

My opinion is, it is not connected to viruses, as qasim1991 say the problem come after installing SP2. Try to disable Windows own firevall. (It is not very good either, install a better one). Here is all kind information of SP2 and problems with it:

How about updating those programs to their latest versions?

well no i know enough about computers to know that it isnt a virus because their are only certain programs that are affected and NOT the OS, also they work the first time, although they dont afterwards unless i reinstall.
Updating programs didnt have any effect but i expected that because of the situation.
    Any more help?
trust me their isnt any spyware, adware or virus problem or the effects would be different.

    thanks for the help ppl!

Do you have Windows firewall and some other firewall too? Is Windows firewall off if using the other? I am asking things about viruspograms and firewalls not therefore viruses etc. but because those programs are connected with other programs in many way.

AND what virusporgram do you have, the name of it? Do your Windows recognize CD/DVD station?

It may come difficulties with some programs when SP2 is installed after those. Best way is install first SP2 and then all programs. Only thing is, allmost same is remove programs complete and then install again but you have already test it. One solution is remove SP2 but that it is not recommended.

Programs you mentioned Nero is known of all kind of errors after SP2.

Well maybe he has Norton, and he didn't realize it, so he installed Trend Micro or something, and now the virus protections are interfering with each other..
    Had that problem once..

Was it off when trying programs or installing them? It should be disabled also during installation. Recommend to get better firewall and disconnect Windows own.
