Will a Free to Air Receiver work with a Direct TV Dish?

Yes, DTV dish and LNB will work with FTA receivers. Providing you aim it properly at the correct sats.

I just moved into a house with a Direct TV Dish on the roof...
So All I really need at this point is a FTA receiver and to re position it if I have too?

Thats correct. If the dish is still aimed for DTV service, the FTA receivers won't pick up DTV. All you need to do is aim it for DN.

Jerry746..What exactly will U pick up?Right now I have Cable & like to watch Deadwood. With a Dish & Receiver, would I still be able to watch shows like this & with what type of receiver do U recommend.I definetly prefer HDTV.
I know certain questions should not be asked or answered. Is their a thread where one could find the channel range & capabilities of said receivers

there is no FTA recivers as of yet that support HDTV, unless they realeased that one new pansat.
Also if you really want hdtv you could get a Sattelite Card for your computer and watch HDTV through that.

Hi rick5446, I was going to copy/paste a channel list for you of the ones working right now but my site is locked out right now. Probably overloaded with everyone checking on the possible German hack of the new encryption. I have 2 computers running with many windows opened trying to get more info and confirmation on this. It looks very good but still different opinions. The one site I trust the most is the one I can't get into.

Before the last encryption changes there wasn't much in the way of a limitation on the available channels. They were ALL there.

Until the NEW changes are put into use, there is no way of knowing their
full affect. Rom cards have been in use for a long time. However until this last ECM, the full potential of the 102 card wasn't being used. Thats where the problem is at this time. No one knows where we are headed this time and if a fix will ever be found. This latest news about Germany is still being looked at. Some say it was just a KEY change on one sat system (Premier) and no help to us. Others say several systems are up and running over there and use the same Nag 2 encryption that we use. Every forum site you get on has both the positive posters and negative posters. I still don't know what to believe.

Jerry746..Well thanks..I guess it would be better to wait.Back when!My nephew bought a closeout at WalMart. He bought Dish & Receiver for 99bucks.Someone he knew said great deal should've bought 2,so he went back & bought another one.Well at the time I was curious too, lucky for me they had sold out.Seems they needed some sort of Baseball card to inable them.A friend of a friend,no probleemo had cards 150bucks ea.WOW!Had Satalite reception.Three day later they did'nt work again, seems they send some sort of virus to your card.Well anyway those boxes are obsolete now.But anyway he spent 500bucks for 3 day of satalite TV..Me I'm just worried I'LL buy a box that will be obsolete in a month or so & will end up having to piece of junk that does not work.Checking prices these receivers are not cheap

They didn't send a signal down towards it but it's just the encryption. Basically if they change the code and you don't know the new one(s) your locked out.

Just to note there's a rumor that dish network will be bought out by direct tv...meaning just one satellite network (not sure about skyangel).

Personally I think I'm just going to go for a regular fta system and maybe a cband. Combining those together plus some OTA in HD is well over 100 or so channels.

If you want to hack stuff that's fine but in the long run I don't want burnt boxes. If you have dsl or cable internet you can download most tv shows you want anyway.

Here are links to 2 good sites. Howvever they are hard to get into right now because of the fix being released. When the receivers are back up and running you can usually find about 250 channels per sat including PPV and video on demand. Many ABC, NBC, CBS channels plus all the standard cable channels like Sci-fi, Disney, TBS. They are all there while the fix is working.

I am also interested in this. So what is the preferred dish to use, Direct or Dish Network? what about the LNB's. What type and how many do you need. Do they need to be singles or duals? Are there any dual tuners out there that will allow multiple room viewing? Any and all help would be appreciated, I am 100% noob at this.

Hombre911, There was no PM sent out that I know of. I suggest you join one of the forums I linked to in my post above, either Future-FTA or Al7bar and start reading the Newbie/ getting started sections. All information you need to get going is there. Files and loaders for the receivers are there also.Good setup instructions can usually be found for each model receiver. Best to read all you can before you purchase any equipment. Good luck.
