    Recently I started receiving the Illegal disc error when burning with DVD-R Disc. When I use a DVD+R disc, I don't get an error. I've used SONY, Ritek & TDK in -R Disc and they all gave me errors. I read that I needed to change my DMA setting to "On" but could not change it in the device manager. I also read that I should change the Book Type in Shrink 3.1, but it doesn't seem to let me edit it. PLEASE HELP...I need to get some sleep !!!!!!!! I'm attaching the log from Nero.

    Just read up some info on your specific burner SONY DVD RW DRU-720A. Looks like you may just need to update your firmware. Yours is a dual format-/+RW dual layered burner which is great. Go to their website and dnld the latest firmware. Goodluck.

    Thanks for the reply. I updated the firmware 3 days ago. JY03 is the latest version. My burner is actually the 710UL (external)I actually corrected the DMA problem. Had to go into my registry and reset 2 files. It changed them from PIO to Ultra Mode. So now I only have the SCSI_ERR problem. Does ANYONE know how to correct this? I updated my ASLI driver. PLEASE>>>>HELP>>>>>>

    @DKDeluxe -

    - you sure you got the correct motherboard drivers installed, as ATAPI is not detected here

    - DMA is still not set correctly on this drive

    - use latest Shrink 3.2.0.15. Some ppl do keep older versions around, i personally don't need to.

    - you're burning too close to outer edge of disc. In Shrink's preferences consider setting this to 4300MB. That's what mine is set to and it doesn't sacrifice much space

    - sounds like a TDK, haven't used these so won't comment

    - your drive doesn't like/recognise the disc

    - splat!

    - drive still doesn't like/recognise the disc

    I think you've answered your own problem here, your drive works fine with the Sony disc in the top half of the log, but does not like that TDK

    Thanks for the reply. I corrected the DMA problem after I sent the orignal note.

    You said I'm burning too close to outer edge of disc. In Shrink's preferences consider setting this to 4300MB.

    Does anyone know how to change the Disc settings in Shrink 3.1? I could not find any instructions for that. Does the space allowed for burning differ form DVD-R vs DVD+R ? Don't understand why this only happens with DVD-R Media. Sorry for so many questions....I'm a Newbie....

    Still don't understand why I'm getting an ATAPI error. This only shows when I'm using DVD-R Media.

    @DKDeluxe -
    See here for various comments re the TDK TTG02 media, and also someone having trouble with same discs on a Sony drive. I have a Sony drive but won't buy TDK due to them using varying quality of manufacturers/therefore varying quality of discs - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/199590

    (that's why i'm not commenting personally about TDK, but instead giving you other people's opinions). There's no size difference between -R and +R, if you used top quality -R discs you would be fine with that drive (top quality discs cost no more than inferior or questionable discs).

    I'm not familiar with Shrink 3.1, what's your reasoning for sticking to an old version when the latest (and no longer updated) version is 3.2.0.15 ?

    Setting the target size away from the outside edge of discs is important with cheapy/crappy media as you can't guarantee that the 'dye' is evenly spread at the edge of the discs.

    I'd say buy decent media but you already have Sony media and the proof of the pudding is you're not having trouble with Sony. I don't use Sony myself as i stick to Verbatim [bold]datalifeplus[/bold], which are also top quality and Sony drives (well all drives) love 'em

    Creaky,

    I'm gonna get the upgrade for Shrink, but before I do that, I'm gonna just buy some more SONY disc's to see if they burn ok. How did you know the SONY disc did not give me an error? Did you see something on the Nero Log?

    I don't know why I can use almost ANY disc in +R format and it will burn ok, but when I use a -R disc, it won't burn anything. Any explanation?

    I have about 40 coasters........I may decorate my room.

    @DKDeluxe,

    Creaky is right - so perhaps you should stick to SONY's media and a few of the good medias. I owned a DRU 710A BYX4 Dual Burner and so far I use FUJI/Taiyo Yuden, SONY, MAXELL and once in a while TDK (all 8X DVD+R, MADE IN JAPAN), and they backed up flawlessly.

    In addendum to your question about DVD Shrink, and this is what you said: "Thanks for the reply. I corrected the DMA problem after I sent the orignal note. You said I'm burning too close to outer edge of disc. In Shrink's preferences consider setting this to 4300MB.

    Here's how to do it, assuming you already have the latest from DVD Shrink.

    ** once after you've already "decrypted" the movie into your HD using DVD Decrypter
    ** Open up DVD Shrink
    ** click on EDIT, Preferences, on "preferences" there's an arrow drop down, you can "select" either to do a "DVD-5(4.7GB), DVD-9(8.5GB), or CUSTOM to your desire, then click "OK", that's it.

    CREAKY, HERBSMAN & ALKOHOL,

    Thanks you sooo much for the fixes. I only have to either update shrink or modify the settings. Hopefully that will solve everything. But It would REALLY HELP if someone could answer question ( Be nice to the newbie :>), just to be clear. Where do you see a SONY
    [bold]DVD-R[/bold]succcessful burn? My DVD+R media burns o.k. The problem is with -R disc. No one answered why + R would be ok (regardless of the disc brand) but -R has not been correct.

    Did I miss that? I probably did.

    bless!

    your drive is i think the next model up from mine (i have the DRU-700A) so i know your drive has no issues with either -R or +R discs [bold](as differing disc formats)[/bold].

    Sony are top quality discs as far as i know as they only use top manufacturers, whereas TDK use discs from good manufactures and from atrociously bad, utter rubbish manufacturers

    Well Sony burners will definitely be more DVD+R friendly , they were one of the big companies that pushed for a new format (+R/RW).
    But if it's a dual format burner then you should have alright success w/ maybe Ritek G05 DVD-R... Taiyo Yuden DVD-R
    There's really not too much price difference between both formats if buying media online these days :)

    heheh - creaky beat me to it ! lol

    O.K., As you suggested, I purchased SONY DVD discs. + and -. The +R disc burned successfully, no problems. The -R added to my coaster collection :>). I changed the DMA setting to [bold]on[/bold] and changed the writing space to 4300 in Shrink. I'm baffled.....

    Why would 2 disc act differently on the same burner? See the error log attached. Is ther any way to get a log of a good burn? Then I can compare them. Any help would be appreciated.

    - i'm afraid you're still not reading my replies fully. You initially posted a logfile containing a log of a good burn of the Sony +R disc along with a failed burn of a TDK -R disc. You've now edited it out otherwise i'd say look at that. You know where the logfile is as you posted it before, so just copy the -R section of logfile into one notepad session and a +R section of logfile into another notepad session

    - ATAPI is [bold]STILL[/bold] not detected here.

    - this is what it [bold]should[/bold] say

    - splat!

    - drive still moaning about that disc

    Creaky,

    Apparently, I'm not that sharp yet with fully understanding the replies. I thought only 1 burn showed in the Nero Error Log. Can you tell me how to correct the ATAPI problem? Is that causing the illegal disc eror?

    Thanks

    @DKDeluxe -

    sorry, pls don't feel my replies are making you feel un-sharp, that's not my intention.
    I've looked back thru your first post and it looks like herbsman may have snipped the logfile, but you definitely had 2 logs there, one for the +R disc, the other for the -R disc.

    As to reinstalling the ATAPI drivers, see if this works -

    Creaky, No need to apologize. This is sort of new to me and I'm not sharp. I appreciate your patience in helping with this problem that has been causing me to lose sleep.

    I already changed my registry to fix the DMA problem. The log shows that the DMA is on. That didn't correct the ATAPI problem. WHat are your thoughts?

    I'm stumped !!!!!!!
