If you really want my opinion I think windows M.E. is the worst excuse for an OS that Bill Gates ever created.

That was gonna be my next suggestion but that doesn't control data transfer I dont believe.
Some firmware does take care of riplock.
    has it always ripped slow?

i had a problem with my burners the first time i tried 16x media...this solved the problem for me. it was like they couldnt read the disc or something to set the burn speed, they both burned at 2.4x.

Well I never burn 16x, even though my burner supports that speed. It increases your chances for read errors. IMO

firmware well help you burn certain discs at the designated speed or faster. Some discs wont even burn without a firmware update.
Go to your burners website and see if you can find an update.

Make very sure you have the exact make and model of your burner before updating or you can ruin your burner.

me either. i was using verbatim 16x+r disc. i have a nec and a sony burner, both had firmware updates. i did that and have never had another problem. i bought both of my burners before 16x media was out that is the only thing i can think of.

i've updated my firmware, made sure data transfer is DMA and not PIO, and dvdd is still only reading at 5.3x
