In order to play .avi files, the audio must be MPEG Layer 3 format.
To check that, check Properties of the .avi file on your computer and click on Summary and then Advanced. If the audio is MPEG Layer 3, it will play on all DVD players.

If it's not (sometimes its AVC or AAC, which happens after you convert MP4 files), it would not play on DVD players. Through I think some DVD players are capable to play it.
