@deathstar, the burn speed adjuster is on the final page of the burning software. There is also a box that you can click to have nero verify the burn (which I recomend doing!) if the drive picks up the disk when you click the speed adjuster there will be a list of supported speeds by the drive and the media! I hope this answers your question? Need anything else just let us know!

Which buring software of Nero are you talking about. I checked the options and all it gave me pretty much was 8x max speed.

@deathstar, after you open up NERO and have gone through the necessary steps all adding your video files from the HD you will, right before you hit the burn button, will have a screen that shows the Source, destination, and the burn speed. Plus the verification pox that can be ticked in which NERO will verify the burn, that everyfile was there! You can adjust burn speed (in occordance with media and burner!)

p.s. do you see the screen that I mention after you open nero and go through the necessary steps of burning the disc image?

@MovieDud, it still gives me an option of 6x or 8x. It has to be how the sony disc are read in the sony burner. I hooked up my old burner and it allows me to burn the sony disc at the speed I want it to burn, and my Verbatim disc I used before gave me the option also to choose (2x and higher)to burn with inside my sony burner. Go figure?

    i did see the screen.

I use Sony media and TY media. The Sony media is Taiwan and it is flawless, both DVD-R and DVD+R.

[bold]The burn speeds for the media instructions are read by the firmware of your burner.[/bold]

If it shows only 6x and 8x then try a firmware update if one is available.

If you look at my sig, you'll see the media codes for the Sony I use and both can show burns as high as 16x so I back them down to 8x. When I use TY DVD+R 8x it also allows me to burn up to 16x so I also back it down to 8x.

@deathstar, I know it seems strange becuase the SOny External has a shorter speed options list than the internal NEC on my machine. I still love the quality and options of the Sony. Certain media both will display the same options, yet on certain media the options might be limited on the Sony. I have had some that are 2x that actually burned at 4x. Good luck! Sorry I couldn't give a tremendous amount of help! Have a great one!

thanks for all your help. i tried updating the firmware for the burner and Nero. it did need updating but that still didn't fix the problem. it has to be the way the burner reads "THESE" specific Sony discs.

I have a question. Under [bold]Nero CD-DVD Speed[/bold] where it says Write Speeds under the Basic Information it tells me that the write speed is 6x-8x but under Extended Information is says 4x to 8x for Write Strategies. What is the difference between the two?

@deathstar, you know I looked at the log and then opened up my NERO (latest version) went through the steps that I normally take (Dvd click burn Image, add files from HD, click next and then I can adjust speed...on this page there is an options button and when I click that there is a box that is ticked on my page and it states : adapt writespeed to disk enabled, which leads me to believe that it allows the burner to burn according to the compatibility of the disk. Now I placed a Ty Yuden in (1x-8x) and it gives me, from the Sony, 4x, 6x, and 8x! Yet if I used an actual Sony product it will go all the way from 1x - 8x in accordance with the media. I would check to see if that box has been ticked and if it isn't tick that box and then examine the media and see if the speed adjustment allows more options. Just a thought! I'll read throught he log and see...maybe some of the other members can check this out as well.

the firmware's up to date (this is quite a new drive). i'd go thru the thread again and check if you've missed any suggestions...

the codeguys site is up again, so was able to look up omnipatcher, one of it's functions is s'posed to be to interrogate your firmware and tell you what speeds certain discs are capable of..
...but it's too early to read it properly and i don't wanna recommend something like that as the util makes it far too easy to mess up the firmware

I'll just go back and buy Verbatim instead.
