Sound no Cable

    my friend has a HP machine with old 40 pin ide cables to dvd how do we get the sound to work without an audio cable to the motherboard.
    it didn't come with one of these leads....we understand that we may have to update the bios or alter a setting in the cmos....any ideas please

    No audio with CD, DVD or both?

    Does it make any sounds - when you boot up does it make the Windows Startup sound?
    If not you need the sound drivers.
    If the sound is built into the motherboard you need to get them from HP.
