splitting a movie in half

    I see peeps talking about ripping.
    how to you or what program for splitting a movie in half that I already have on my hard drive.
    I tried it with nero and the first half wotked but the second half didnt.
    they are divx movies and avi. that I downloaded any want to put on a disk..

    I have tried to use shrink and I get
    an error invalid file name.
    any ideas..
