just started backing up my DVD collection, and i have already run into a problem. i am using a g5 iMac with a superdrive, MacTheRipper and Popcorn. i am trying to back up discs with over 2 hours of footage on them (specifically the X-Files, Ken Burn's Jazz and Baseball, and Kung Fu) and am unable to split up episodes onto separate discs to get better video quality. does anyone have any recommendations about software/process or any general advice that would allow me to do this? although i am a newbie to this forum, and the DVD ripping/burning process i know a great deal about both macintosh and video process and formats, so feel free to give me any type of advice, no matter how advanced. i'm a big boy and just want something that is going to give me good video quality (DVD quality bare minimum.) any help that i can get would be much appreciated, i am running out of options seeing as i haven't encountered any posts or tech help anywhere about this, and Popcorn's support is crap. much appreciated.

Once you have backed up your DVD using MacTheRipper you need to use YadeX (freeware from http://www.macetvideo.com/dl_center/dl_center.html) which enables you to rip out any part of a DVD in either video & audio streams (M2V + AC3) or as VOB's but the you will need DVD Studio Pro (From Apple) to rebuilt the disc. Hope this helps?

I had the same problem with PopCorn, although I still use it to write dvd's. When
compression or extraction is needed, I now use dvd2onex....this gives you much more
control of what you extract than PopCorn and a much smoother motion picture......no
    jittery scenes - no artifacts...

awesome, DVD Studio Pro is my language. i would prefer not spending anymore than i have to since i've already shelled out for Popcorn, and i already have Final Cut Studio. just one more question about this YadeX… (i’m at work right now, so i might answer it myself when i start working on it at home…) do i use YadeX to rip directly from the DVD, or from the file created by MacTheRipper? and if it is from MTRcreated files, which one? i am not too familiar with this whole Video_TS format and everything it then entails… i'm not even 100% sure what the files are that MTR creates when it unencrypts from a DVD…

i really am thankful for the help guys. mrmoe, i hate to say it, but i hope i don't have to take yours. not that i don't believe it, but i already own DVD Studio, and i really don't want to shell out another $70 for dvd2oneX :) either way, i am very gratefully to both of you. thanks again.

Back up the DVD using MTR to your computer then open YadeX and go to > File > Open and find the DVD you backed up with MTR and select the VIDEO_TS folder and click Choose. Once it is open you will see all the Tracks etc Track 1, Track 2 and the Menu's. The Tracks will be the episodes you want, and if you click the arrows at the side of the Tracks you will see each Scene, Cell and Object within each Track so you have alot of control over which parts of the DVD you want to rip out. You can even rip out individual frames! If you select a Track or Scene you can see it in the Preview window at the bottom just use the scroll bar to see which bits you want. It even tells you how big each Track is and give you the exact Timestamp. Just select an episode you want and go to > File > Save Streams. Then import your streams into DVDSP and built you new DVD. Bingo!

I also am new to ripping with a Mac,got Mac the Ripper from FilePedia and looked at DVD2OneX, but doing some searching I came across DVDRemaster which is cheaper the DVD2OneX and has two versions, Normal and Pro, with the Pro you can delete Audio and Video sections that you don't want. It has a trial version,so give it a try.
