could someone please clarify or give me a concrete answer because various people have different ideas -
the question is can a person/pc get spyware from *just* visiting a website?
Or does one have to actually download software from that site?
everyone I ask has different theories.
I don't visit porn sites because they are famous for spyware but someone told me any website is potentially dodgy except I guess the main ones we trust and know.
anyway, can somebody give me the real facts?

Yes a web site is able to push content unless you are protected and configured correctly

not really. its really easy to avoid and pretty easy to counter.

stay on safe sites, have good scanners and a firewall if your paranoid

I am somewhat paranoid about it.
I keep to the sites I know and trust.
have in and out firewall which I hope would start going crazy if stuff got on.
and a couple spyware programmes too.
    thankyou kateman for the advice.
I should learn to relax a little but I want to protect my pc.

    it's not the greatest firewall Norton.(NIS 2007)
also anti-spyware by Norton which I presume would not catch a quarter of the stuff so I also installed Ad-aware. Had spybot S & Destroy but I didn't like it
