If you have a null modem cable and want to flash it get gtrom 4.00 and crypstar core 2.57 from the link below

Try a factory reset and rescan first.

    hi all,

just reflashed my brother in laws "the box" got all the information, flash and software from the afterdawn forums. thanks to everyone who contributed !!!

now i am looking at the wifes friends starview box.

its a clone 18 x 7 vents. scart plugs on right (when you look at box from the back)

i know i have the correct null modem cable,
i know the com port is correctly configured,
(i only just finished using them to flash the bil's box.)

    i tried gtrom v4.351005
    i tried gtrom v4.0
i even tried gt super v7.05

the problem is the box doesn't talk to the p.c.

i select the port and browse to the software
(i want to put the 2.57 on then the cryotstar update for autoroll)
i click download and the progress bar appears at 0%
it stays at 0% for a couple minutes then flashes the message
    "flash update fail"
i tried this again with the box on standby but same result

when i switch the box off at the back or unplug it for a while and try again i am getting exactly the same symptoms.

    note :-

when i switch it on initially the bar flashes 4 places across the led
    then
    it comes up -70 briefly
    then on briefly
then 0087 (i think this is the channel)
when i press standby 12.00 comes on the led

does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? is it a bad flash? is there any way to recover this thing or is it for filing under b for bin?

any suggestions at all followed letter for letter

    thanks again

    mark ..

It should be gtrom 4.00. Keep trying to flash it with that. I flashed a box for my friend yesterday and it took a couple of times before the box would take it. Its working fine now so just persevere

thanks scouser i knew i could rely on this site for suggestions....

    here goes

If you have a bad flash, switch it off then on at the back & make sure its on standby.
Then Flash as normal. This also applies to flashing (up & downloading) the channel data file.
If for some reason you cannot flash and have set and checked everything else such as ports and connections,
then you should switch off at the back wait a moment then on again. Then try to flash again.

tried this several times with gtrom v4.0 and cryptstar v1.4 core257

    no joy !!

Connect the box to the pc with your cable but switch it off at the back. Load the correct
firmware bin file into GTRom & set it to the correct com port, and select App file only then hit Download.
Only then switch on at the back to power on the box. It may take a few sec. so wait at least 30 sec.
(If it doesn't work 1st time try also waiting a couple of sec. to switch on after pressing download in the loader.) It may take more than 1 try to work, but eventually you'll see the loader kick in and the % bar increase. You won't see the % on the Starview though. Only green lines moving left to right. Towards the end of the flash you'll see a message in GTRom saying FLASH BURNING. Then it will reach 100% and wait for the download complete pop up box to appear & the box will reboot back to factory setup. You will have lost any channel data previously on the box & will need to rescan & switch on EMU and set the box up from scratch.

again tried several times with gtrom v4.0 and cryptstar

    again no joy !!

heres a thought ... should i throw this thing at the spanner who asked me to look at it for them then kick the wife out of my house for having such irritating friens ??? lol

or can you guys think of somehting else to try?

    thanks again for your efforts

It takes quite a few attempts sometimes. However I prefer your last option LOL :)

    still trying !!

does the box need to be in stand by mode ?

when i switch it on each time :-

i get the 4 bars across the fron 1 after the other
    then -70-
    then on
    then the channel number

i can press the stand by button on the remote which brings the time up. so again does the box need to be in stand by mode to flash?

No if you get ---- it indicates a bad flash, you just need power to it, so standby is preferable. The digits coming up on the LCD though may indicate a capacitor failure but we wont go there just yet.
