I have to hit the road soon so I would say your problem is you do not have the correct USB to serial adapter.

A lot of people mix up a USB to Serial Cable when its USB to Serial Port Cable that is required.

This is the one you need:

    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx...t10&doy=search&MenuName=USB to Serial Adaptor

Bring the one you have back and say they gave you the wrong one. Failing that do as I said and do it from a desktop with just the null modem cable.

Gents - back with a request for more help. I returned the box to source and resolved the 'stuck on language' problem...however, although channel names and numbers appear at bottom of tv screen - they quickly disappear leaving a 'no signal' msg on screen.

Should I attempt to flash the box again (didnt work last week)? Or is this a different problem....that can be resolved by rescanning or ???

Strange problem, have you tried a factory reset and autoscan.

    oh the pain....! ;-)
I got stuck in the menu at 'language' following a factory reset - which didnt work - I couldnt exit out of it despite rebooting etc...
I tried flashing using GTRom and appropriate bin file - but download failed numerous times... (having splashed out on the cabling etc at Maplins)... I got good help from Ferg in doing this..
I gave it back to an unnamed source to fix... got it back today - and ....No Signal..
looking at the system info - it shows ver 2.55e_E - dont think its been changed...

this is real tough therapy Scouser !!!! help ...

Around in circles we go LOL. You will have to reflash it but again you will have to see if it is a genuine or clone box.

I posted a link on clone/genuine info earlier in the thread, you can have a look there.

You are a glutton for punishment :) But we will get it sorted ;)

    U said it ! a glutton......LOL
Its a genuine box (checked previously). I got the cables here, the GTRom and firmware ready - and even the step by step guide courtesy of my previous attempts ..
I was reading on other posts that u should turn on the box a few secs after clickin on 'download' when attempting to flash...

B4 i start - why should it be flashed again ?

I can only imagine. You need to reflash the box to version 4 to enable autoroll. You do not need to turn off the Starview, just put it in standby and flash it.

Before you do this are you getting any channels or are they breaking up intermittently?

I get a channel name for 2 secs and it disappears...this is the case for all channels... (it reverts to No Signal) and a black screen

Doesnt bode well. Try and reflash it, and we will see where you are then.

Tried it a few times here.. no luck - the % never leaves 0 -
    Flash update fail

    I'm using GTrom 4 and STARVIEW_H20070607_400eE_api - cables secured,

The only difference between now and when it previously worked is I got a new TV - but all connections are fine, scart - linking box and tv, n*l cable into and out of box to tv... switch to Ext 1 on tv to view channels...and the rest is as per previous posts.....

I'm beginning to turn to the dark side...... ;-)
