Does that mean you had the wrong cable?

You will need version 4 firmware as you said you have a genuine box. Click the link at the end of my post marked Eamos FTA Library, you will find it in the Starview Firmware folder.

I think he means he didn't have the correct drivers for USB - Serial port. At least all is well now and he's up and running.

i am also have issues with flashing ver 4.00

i have the USB to serial port adapter with the correct drivers.
i have changed the port from port 8 (default) to port 2 as gt rom loader only allows me choose 1-4.
i have tried to upload my current image and also tried to download the ver 4 to the starview. both times i get to hit download and nothing happens for 10 seconds and then get message " Flash Update Fail . . ."

Options are to press retry or cancel and retry only brings the same message up so i have to cancel,

from reading page 8 or this thread i am quite confident i have the original not a clone.

any thoughts / ideas greatly appreciated.

plugged into com2 and selected com 2 on gtrom loader. no joy.

is there any version of gtrom that allows me to go further than com4 as mine defaults to com8 when i plug it in and i have to change it to com2 as the only available one of com 1-4.

is there any way to see what is using com 1,3,4?

Are you sure you have the correct null modem cable as indicated above you have the correct usb adapter but you also need the correct null modem cable.

    you may be onto something..

i attached this Gender Changer to the adapter i got at komplett in my earlier post. could this be my problem or should what i have suffice. i'm not using any null modem cable just the adapter and the gender changer.

Just using the gender changer with the adapter will not work. You need to use the null modem cable in conjunction with the adapter.

to me i think problem .null modem cable has to be used because of configuration of wires inside, your setup does not allow this.
    maybe scouser might confirm also

The gender changer is just a straight through converter whereas the null modem cable is a crossover cable thus allowing your pc to talk to the box. Basically transmit goes to receive and vicesa versa.
