    Hi,

I was on here a few days ago saying that I had downloaded the files but couldn't get them onto my Box. When I rpess download it jsut stays on 0%. I'm unsure if the file is even in the correct format (although I've followed all instructions on here) becuase the icon is the same as when a file is not recognised. A few days ago I was advised to buy a Null Modem cable which I have done but it makes no difference.

I've made a couple of screen dumps and put them in a word doc, I'd be really greatful if one of the 'experts' could pm me their e-mail address so I could send it to them.

Thanks for all your help do far.

Ok guys I think that I have found out why you cannot communicate to your Starview boxes via the Serial-to-USB cable convertors.
The image below is more or less self explanatory.

This problem can be simply sorted out by recoding the GTROM_Loader to allow additional COM ports (Up to COM7?) So the GTROM_Loader developer could be nice as to carry out these minor changes and make it available as say GTROM_Loader V4.01?

    Thanks.

I know the developer and could ask but can you not just go to the comm port properties and change the port number?

    Did you know,
The port number of the USB to Serial converter can easily be changed to COM 1,2,3 or 4 in the Device manager of Windows.

How would you do that? Would that make other COM port devices to be reconfigured?

    Edit

Just checked in Vista and it doesn't allow you to change the COM port numbers, just a bunch of reset and update driver options. (Or I'm looking in the wrong place being as I don't usually mess around with this sort of thing)

I'm sure their could be occasions where it might but it would only be for the duration that the box was connected.

I do it that way all the time & it never caused me any problems.

I'm not suggestion for one minute that there's anything wrong with your request but just making you aware that you can get around it easily, here's how..

How to change the COMM. Port number in Windows XP.

    Do the following.

    START
    Right Click "MY COMPUTER"
    Choose "MANAGE"
In the resulting window, click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
In the right hand pane, click on the little plus sign beside "PORTS" in the right hand pane.
Right click on the USB Adapter (Should be something like "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm. Port (COM#)
    Choose "Properties"
    Click on "PORT SETTINGS" TAB
    Click on "ADVANCED"
Then you will see the COM Port Number Box. You should be able to change it there using the drop down box.
Try to set it to COM2

Set GTRom or STBLink to COM2 & try to connect.

If that fails try another port number.

That would be a real help if the developer would be kind enough to do that for us COM port configuring nOObs.

It's almost identical. (But I only have Ultimate so I'm not 100% sure about home)

Click START & right click COMPUTER then choose MANAGE

If you do not get the MAMAGE option you can get there through CONTROL PANEL SYSTEM DEVICE MANAGER

    The rest is as XP

i read somewhere earlier that there are 2 sta*vie* b*oxes, one is the orignal and the other is a clone. It also said that if you try update the firmware in the clone type box it kills the box and it'll stop working.. how true is that? and how do u differentiate a clone from the orignal starv*iew?

    Thanx

    Here are more images below;

For some odd reason, when I do the Channel Data File Upload. The Starview box just restarts 2-3 times as if I was flashing it.

    Edit

I can't change the COM port to any other one of the four because they are being used. (Have changed from COM7 to COM2)

Can you get to a standalone pc with a D9 serial port and take the adapter out of the equation?

I had a standalone PC, but due to some questionable circumstances that's out of the equation. (Due to a complete system blowout! it was a 10 year old pc and was on for a year non-stop and it finally gave in.)

That's another option for sure but he'd be looking for an oldish machine.

What you could do for now is disable your Bluetooth temporarily to free up the ports, then set the port number, do the flash & re-enable your Bluetooth afterwords.

Hmmm, I’ve disabled all the Bluetooth ports and had to restart the system so I did. Started the pc, then tried the different ports from COM1-COM5 in Computer Management but the GTROM_Loader seems to be doing the same thing as before on all attempts.

Sc0user, those additional changes would be really appreciated by the developer if it's not too much trouble. Thanks.

I'm sure its a smallish code change, but off all the forums, your the first to need it. Cant you disable the other ports, flash and continue...after all this problem is more your setup than a problem with the software.

there are more important issues with the software etc. than this!!
