Loading software to the box • Plug the RS232 lead into the back of the box and to your PC. • Plug the box into the mains and turn it on. It should display ON, on the display • Double click the red arrow which is the loading software • Now click the bin file button • Double click the starview file • Now click download (this will take a few minute) Well done now your box has the software on.
DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, GOT STARVIEW BOX PLUGED INTO COMPUTER PUT POWER ON TO BOX GOT FILES ON COMPUTER BUT CANNOT GET THEM TO LOAD ONTO BOX CAN YOU HELP ME WITH EASY INSTUCTIONS.
THIS GUIDE WILL HOPEFULLY HELP THOSE HAVING PROBLEMS SETTING UP, FLASHING & SCANNING THEIR STARVIEW. 1 Make sure your feed is active - this will generally be true if you have a sub. & digital service is available in your area. If you have no sub. just because there is a cable there doesn't mean it's active. Or it may have been active but is disconnected at the other end in the box on your street or at the point where it enters your house. There are only a limited number of connectors, sometimes not enough for every house in the street, so if someone with a sub. needs access & there are no spare connections left they will disconnect a house that is connected if they no longer have a sub. Or if you had a sub. & now don't it may be disconnected as a matter of course. This guide is for experimental & educational use only, please don't abuse this advice for viewing pay channels that you are not paying for. 2 Make sure your cable is working correctly-get a new pre- crimped cable not one that you attach the connectors on the end of the cable yourself, or check the cables with a tester if you know how to do this. Also make sure all your connections are tight & secure. (on the wall & into the back of your box and the RF adapter). If you are using a splitter make sure it's working correctly & not losing too much of the signal. Test by using the feed directly without the splitter 1st. (If you need a splitter get an isolated Qamtex/Vocom one). If you have signal problems you may have a fault in the small brown box where your feed enters the house- there is an adapter there too. Water may have got in. Or the Tap your house cable is connected to in the box on your street maybe faulty or the cable under your road from this box to your house faulty. Don't interfere with these! 3 Make sure the feed is plugged into the cable input at the back of the box-& NOT the ANT. input! (Connecting to your provider's network may breach their T&C's.Please check 1st) 4 Goto the Receiver section of the forum not the talking boards & download the latest WORKING firmware. & the GTRom loader software. If the firmware is a zipped or rar file (meaning compressed using winzip or winrar- .zip/.rar file extension) extract it to its bin extension. If the loader is zipped or rared extract it to its exe extension. At present v3.00 is the latest official firmware, dated 27th May 2007 on flashing. This fixes various issues relating to time & EPG & Autoroll. In menu check your system information. If it shows the November 2006 258 firmware you may need to flash with the above or later if appropriate as this one may not work correctly in letting you access the CAS SYSTEM menu to enable EMU. (Please remember that this applies to UK only- sometimes if you are in Eire you may have to use an older firmware maybe the 257 or 255 or cryptstar fix for your box for it to autoupdate) please try the latest firmware 1st. 5 Connect your box and PC with a Null modem cable & switch on your PC then starview box. Make sure your box is connected to the TV by a tested and working Full scart cable & the TV is set to the correct AV input that matches the scart that you are using. (Its not essential for the box to be connected to the TV in order to flash firmware or channel data, it will still work without. Only that it's easier obviously to make sure it works and test afterwards.) 6 Make sure you know which com port on your PC the null modem cable is using and make sure the baud rate is set to 115200 in device manager in system settings in control panel. Make sure you know that the serial port on your PC is working & is connected securely to the PCs motherboard if appropriate. Its a good idea sometimes to remove all other devices such as printers/scanners or other unnecessary USB devices as sometimes there may be a conflict if the device is sharing a com port with the serial connector. This may be more relevant in older pcs with pre XP OS, such as Win 98 and you may have to alter BIOS settings to enable com ports or settings to let windows allocate them. If you have no serial port on your PC, say because it's a laptop you may have to get a USB to serial PORT adaptor cable to attach your Null modem cable to. You may need drivers installed also for the cable. (This is not the same as a usb to serial lead which won't work.) Look here for cable info. There's some more links at the bottom of this topic for USB drivers and another topic with more info. http://www.satdownloads.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1752.msg20520#msg20520 These cables can be purchased online at wizard satellite or at somewhere like maplins. Or if you have a parallel port for a printer, a parallel to serial adaptor may be cheaper. Then attach the null modem cable to that. N.B. I have not tested that, its just a thought as the USB cables are more expensive than parallel adaptors. If you have a desktop PC then you can purchase a serial adaptor and fit it to the motherboard if you know how. 7 In GT Rom software make sure that you set the correct com port that matches the one that is being used in device manager. Press the Help button and read the instructions. 8 Make sure App file only is selected & click Bin File then browse to the firmware in the directory on your PC and select it. (Again make sure you are selecting the extracted file and NOT the zip or rar file.) 9 You will then see "GCR 3510" in the STB model box. DO NOT TYPE ANYTHING HERE. (SEE POINT 26 IF APPLICABLE) http://www.satdownloads.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=3193.msg13061#msg13061 10 If the box has had an older software installed which was working but no longer updates then switch it off at the back then back on again and tune to an unencrypted channel (No $ symbol)quickly before it gets caught in an auto-updating loop. ( Select OK and the channel list appears, move up or down to select a channel without a green dollar symbol on the right ($) & hit ok.) Make sure the channel is working then switch it into standby on the remote or the front of the box. You will then see the clock. If an older firmware is on the box and it starts to autoupdate the keys, but then sticks and then you put it in standby you will not be able to flash the box correctly. You must go into standby from a working unencrypted channel first. 11 Run the GTRom loader flash the ROM chip by pressing Download & watch the % progress increase until you see Download completed message on your PC. DO NOT SWITCH OFF UNTIL COMPLETE! That means you see the DOWNLOAD COMPLETE pop up on pc. The Starview will then switch on again. Its always a good idea not to do anything else on the PC while flashing to minimize the risk of corruption during the flash. And make sure you close any other running applications and none are scanning or start scanning during the flash. For example Antivirus/Antispyware programs. Or that you are downloading anything from the net. It may not be an issue but better safe than sorry, as maxing out the CPU can sometimes cause the flash to fail, the last thing you want is to damage the ROM chip in the starview. 12 You can now disconnect your your Null modem cable from box & PC if you wish. 13 If you have previously had a bad flash switch it off then on at the back & make sure its on standby. Then Flash as guided above. This also applies to flashing (up & downloading) the channel data file. If for some reason you cannot flash and have set and checked everything else such as ports and connections, then you should switch off at the back wait a moment then on again. Then try to flash again. If for some reason it won't go into standby and you see a constant moving green dot.You may want to wait to see if it goes into standby or switches on eventually or reflash from this state though it may not work. Some users have reported that flashing an older firmware 1st that was working, then trying again may help. If your flash has failed or corrupted try again but 1st flash back the firmware that was on before your failed flash. Re download the firmware just in case you had a corrupted file then try again. If you do flash from the moving green line state at boot, you will see the % increase on the GTRom loader software but not on the starview. Toward the end of the flash you'll see a Flash Burning message in GTRom. Make sure you wait until all is finished and you see the Download complete popup message in GTRom. 14 Another method you can use to recover from a bad flash, eg. the box won't boot to standby and is stuck in pre standby, either after about 3 or 4 moving green lines the box sticks with the green line not moving at all or it keeps moving forever. If the box will NOT RE-FLASH as normal from on or standby, try this but it may take a few goes to work. Connect the box to the pc with your cable but switch it off at the back. Load the correct firmware bin file into GTRom & set it to the correct com port, and select App file only then hit Download. Only then switch on at the back to power on the box. It may take a few sec. so wait at least 30 sec. (If it doesn't work 1st time try also waiting a couple of sec. to switch on after pressing download in the loader.) It may take more than 1 try to work, but eventually you'll see the loader kick in and the % bar increase. You won't see the % on the Starview though. Only green lines moving left to right. Towards the end of the flash you'll see a message in GTRom saying FLASH BURNING. Then it will reach 100% and wait for the download complete popup box to appear & the box will reboot back to factory setup. You will have lost any channel data previously on the box & will need to rescan & switch on EMU and set the box up from scratch. 15 If you don't know the state of the box switch it on see what happens see if there already has been a channel scan done before-meaning there are channels on it working or not. If so tune to an unencrypted channel as above then standby then reflash. 16 If No channels at all goto standby then flash as above. 17 You may want to do a factory reset then flash as above. 18 If done after flashing the 1st thing you will have to do (after setting language) is a full auto channel scan in the installation section of the menu. 19 You may have to alter the provider to a suitable one or scan on all to pick up the channels. Pure N*l areas have a symbol rate of 6887 whereas the others are 6952 sometimes you may have to auto scan more than once on the same provider. Or on all providers on your symbol rate in order to pick up all channels. Sometimes you may get duplicates of the same channel, this is normal. If in your area your scanning range is limited (eg. you're in a pure N. area with a symbol rate of 6887) you can select another provider say X, then briefly auto scan then cancel. Then go into manual scan & change the symbol rate from 6952 to 6887. Then scroll down to Network Scan, click right Vol. to Enable, then OK and it should then scan on those frequencies. (You may have to do this twice for it to fully scan). Please also see point 27 of the guide for further scanning tips. 20 Once completed it will tell you **channels found, exit on the remote and enter the Parental control section of the menu. Press "i" (info) then "2004" & you will enter the CAS system menu. (alternatively from the Main Menu press 1570). Scroll down to Key EMU and switch it on by toggling the volume arrows on the remote. Then move up to Nagravision and press OK select your area provider then press OK. Exit and scroll down to Default key and hit OK. It will flash "Please wait for saving" Exit all way back to main menu. 21 Select User Setup and then set your desired language. Aspect ratio -Set it to either Letter screen of Full screen depending on your preference. (For older firmware set 4:3 if you have an older set or 16:9 if it's a widescreen.) If you have a non widescreen 4:3 TV set it's best to use the letterbox setting. If you have a Widescreen then at the moment the 2.60 onwards firmware has a problem with displaying a full widescreen broadcast properly. Although in order to correct this after switching from Letterbox to Fullscreen in the menu you must switch the box off at the back then back on again. Or in the menu/user setup alter the TV type by highlighting it then using the up volume arrow to change it. So just scroll the setting from PAL through NTSC & AUTO back to PAL. Then exit the menu. This has the same effect as power cycling the receiver. But then when a 4:3 programme is transmitted it will be output in its' true aspect by the starview which means when it is viewed on a Wide screen TV it will have black bars on the left & right of the picture. Please see here for more info. http://www.satdownloads.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=5924.0 Set the TV type. In UK its PAL (Phase Alternate Line) or you can set it to Auto but make sure it was on the correct one before that. Video output is best set to RGB if your TV can take this through the scart but make sure the setting on your TV for that scart AV input is also set to RGB in the menu or settings area on your TV set. Otherwise use CVBS (composite signal). The TV scart output of the starview (bottom connector) will give give you RGB output, the video output scart (top one) is only for composite video. (This applies to the original starview, the new version has a slightly different scart layout) Please remember many channels that you receive are NOT transmitted in 16:9 aspect ratio (Full Widescreen) it is also dependent on the programme as well as the channel. Many are in 4:3 or 14:9. What this means is that if you are watching on a widescreen TV & the channel/programme is not being transmitted in widescreen you should expect to see black areas on the left and right of the screen. This is NORMAL & is the way to view the picture as the programme maker intended. If you attempt to alter your TV settings to fill the full screen you may well distort the image. By stretching the left and right, the image will be squashed, objects and people reduced vertically. This is an incorrect setting. You can't make a non widescreen broadcast fill the screen unless you stretch it which will distort it. The only other way to make it fit is to crop the top and bottom off the 4:3 image and zoom in. Though this will defeat the purpose as you then lose some of the image. In time more programmes will be shown in widescreen. Occasionally they broadcast the wrong aspect ratio flag and then you have to adjust the setting on your TV or starview accordingly. If the programme is 4:3 but the box is set for16:9 sometimes a subd box will expand the picture to fit a 4:3 screen but the starview doesn't, what may help is to switch the starview to 4:3 mode. Set the time - when highlighted move the arrow to the right or select OK & the Time setting sub menu appears. (In older pre 2.60 firmware: in the time zone area set the GMT+..:.. section. This must be correct or your EPG times will be off. This will depend on the time of year, clocks going back forward will affect this. In the UK it will be either GMT+00:00 (In winter) or GMT+01:00 (in summer).) In 260 or later you can set the Summer Time setting to ON or OFF Set the time by scrolling down then then selecting Current time and using the right arrows select AUTO (In 260 or later) or input the numbers in 24hr clock. If AUTO is selected the starview will retain its' correct time setting after power down and restart even after re-flasing. The Timer section is for setting the box to come on or off to record from for example. Remember this only works on a 24hour basis, but you can set 8 changes and repeat daily if you want. 22 In modulator use the arrows to select the output RF (radio Frequency) signal. If your box is connected to your TV with an aerial lead- again make sure the connections are firm the cable is previously tested as working and you have connected it to the correct output on the back of your box. The UK setting is PAL-I other regions may vary, in other PAL settings the picture may work but the sound may not work properly. In Rf channel select a number that you know that there is no existing channel being broadcast on or another device outputting on such as a video/dvd or other box. Sometimes its best to select the channel on the TV you wish to use then tune to a blank area with just clear snow and save, making a note of the frequency number on the TV if you can (21 to 69). Then set the same number on the starview then fine tune your TV. If you can't note the number on the TV just go through the numbers on the starview hitting OK until the picture appears. This a pain though as you'll keep having to flick from scart to RF on your TV. The default on the Starview is 38.You could tune your TV to this if you want to see if there is any interference. 23 Set the On Screen Display (OSD) as preferred for time and opaqueness. 24 The S/W Transfer enables you to transfer firmware or channel order/scan data from one box to another. Simply connect the 2 boxes together back to back with the null modem cable. The master is the box you are transferring from and the slave the one transferring to. Make sure the master is connected to the TV & is switched on while the slave is on standby and not in range of the remote control. In menu/user setup select S/W Transfer, then with the Vol up button select either Code SW or Channel data. The Code SW option transfers the firmware from master to slave while the Channel Data option only the channel scan info and order from the master. Press Ok and the transfer begins. Wait until it is all finished & it shows that it is complete before disconnecting the boxes.
Do a manual scan with network scan enabled. this might find them. or you could download a channel dump for your area and flash it on to starview. these can be found on satdownloads.
http://www.satdownloads.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=4707.0 you can find them here. you use the gtrom loader to load them on to the starview
same way as you download the other file to your starview. except that you click on channel file button and load channel file into gtrom loader.
