    Hi,

Anyone get Streambox Ripper to run on Windows 7? I have no trouble with Streambox VCR, but can't get Streambox Ripper to work correctly. The About screen says the version is 2.009. Here's where I am and what I've tried ..

First, I got the wmaudsdk.dll error, so I followed the instructions and tried to install wmaudioredist.exe, located in the StreamboxRipper2009 directory. That didn't seem to work, as the screen just flashed, and when I tried to launch the App again I got the same error.

So, one by one, I started copying the DLLs it was complaining about from PC on which Streambox Ripper works for me (XP Pro) to my new one (Windows 7), right into that StreamboxRipper2009 directory, each time it complained about not being able to find a specific DLL. I ended up copying wmaudsdk.dll, drmclien.dll, and strmdll.dll.

But then I ran into the Real Media problem, so I copied the cook.dll to cook3260.dll as per http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/65016 and at least it would launch. However, when I try to convert some Real Audio files (captured with Streambox VCR) to MP3, it runs without complaint, but the resulting MP3 files are only 128 Bytes, whereas they should contain many MB of data. In case anyone's still reading, here's the contents of one of the files (hexl-find-file in emacs):

    00000000: 5441 4720 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 TAG
    00000010: 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020
    00000020: 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020
    00000030: 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020
    00000040: 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020
    00000050: 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020
    00000060: 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020
    00000070: 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 20ff .

So, I've gotten it to "launch", and I've gotten it to "run", but I haven't gotten it to "run correctly" when converting RA to MP3. Has anyone gotten Streambox Ripper to work on Windows 7? If so, how?

    Thanks,
    Jim S.

I don't understand why you are capturing what seems to be analog audio to RA format proprietary crap.. when you can just grab to mp3 (or flac or anything else) using audacity.
I guess you know that wincrap7 is piled high with all kinds of "features" (drm style stuff) designed to put a stop to all analog source capture? RA files are drm'd proprietary format.. avoid..

I am a firm believer in using tried and true market leaders instead of playing with something that MIGHT produce a product as good after playing with it for a hundred hrs or so. Some persons need that challenge.

If you don't use audacity to capture and EAC or dbPowerAmp to rip and dbPowerAmp to convert.

I find it surprising that anyone would struggle to put DRMs on their music. I say DEATH to DRMs!

Paula_X -- I didn't say I was capturing analog. I'm capturing a stream that happens to be in RA format. I need to rip that to MP3. Any help with the original question or a suggestion on what works well for ripping RA to MP3? Will EAC or dbPowerAmp do that?

I think we are confused by semantics. You only rip CDs and DVDs. Are you trying to extract audio from a VCR tape? If you are, then the simple, low tech way is to capture the analog sound in your sound card. Low tech does not equate to low quality.

Ok, my bad, I was using "rip" to mean conversion from Real Audio to MP3. After all, the program that -- used to -- do that for me is named StreamBox Ripper. <g> Thanks Mez, for the clarification.

I can capture the original stream as fast as the source can pump it out, i.e., in vastly-faster-than-real-time, using StreamBox VCR. This is extremely important, as the source can be up to several hours in length. But that produces RA files that I need to convert to MP3, and join together actually. Streambox Ripper and mpgtx worked flawlessly and very quickly for me in XP Pro, but I can't get the Ripper to work on Windows 7. Hence my question. What would you use for this? Thanks.

    dbPowerAmp.

I suggest downloading the free trial and add all the codecs you think you will need. Real Media being one of them. After the 30 days you will not be able to use the apps but there are 'plug ins' to file explorer that will continue to work. They are handier than the apps and faster as well. Highlight and right click will allow you to convert the highlighted files as long as you installed the to and from codecs.

Lame and Helix are the 2 best mp3 codecs. Lame will give you an imperceptivly better mp3 and Helix but is slow. Helix is lighting fast.

I would also rip any CDs in the 30 days. It is the finest easy to use ripper I have used.

I would also strongly suggest converting to something other than RA. That is a huge quality hit. I would try to go to some form of lossless then your mp3s will sound perfect. RM, Apple and M$ all use the same basic compression techniques licensed by the same third party. Lossy 2 lossy conversions take a quality hit. More so if the to is a bit inferior. It is the lossy 2 lossy conversions that give lossy a bad rap. They are always second class audio.

If all you have are RA file(s), I believe Super will convert them to mp3 or to other formats..Download link is at bottom of page..Good luck!
