I'm a fan of both to tell you the truth... I like XP because its really user friendly...I hate it for the same reasong though. I love, love, love linux because of everything it has to offer.. there is so much you can do with it...its amazing...right now I'm running windows (my laptop dual boots) and its ok...not much to look at but its ok

now Linux rules... My other boot is to Ubuntu running the KDE GUI. I love it...everything is available for you to tweak...the only prob is that installing can be a pain in the ass...Have you ever tried to install Java on a linux box...its a nightmare...

    @ Auslander

I haven't used Linux but I like the idea and I've been keeping up with the developments. The various distros have come a long ways towards ease of use and I may build a simple box for Linux testing. I don't like what I've read about DRM or possible DRM attatched to Longhorn so I'll bide my time and see if there is indeed any DRM crap before migrating to it. If there is DRM then I'll wait until XP's no longer viable and take the Linux plunge.

I was a bit harsh on Macs earlier but I get tired of the Mac fanatics trashing Windows the way they do. Every OS has it's faults and XP is no exception but overall it's a good, solid OS and, in my estimation, the best Windows to date. Just as pulsar noted, with minimal maintenance and half a brain Windows will run problem free.

Macs are good machines but they have definite limitations for many, many folks. Gamers, tweaker, modders, overclockers and those who want the most for their budget are left out in the cold when it comes to Macs. There's precious little versatility either.

    - Want to build an inexpensive media server? Get a PC.

    - Want a killer gaming desktop? Get a PC.

    - Want a small, quiet home theater rig? Get a PC.

    - Want a compact LAN party rig? Get a PC.

    - Want to upgrade a few components for better performance on a budget? You can only do it with a PC.

    - Like to overclock? Get a PC.

    - Want a platform with the most available software and apps? Windows is it.

    - Need something that would go really nice with all that new Ikea furniture? Get a Mac ;)

Neph: yeah, MS is really starting to scare me. this summer, i'm going to play around with the lightest version of Linux i could find: Knoppix. it seems like a lovely OS that i can run right from my cd-rom without installing anything. if it's good, and i find it easy to use, i'll pick up a 20 gig drive or so and put in an external case to boot from. if'n a good linux distro suits me fine with my proggies and whatnot, then i'll leave XP on another system and do a full conversion on this one. i hear there's some things you can do, like put Wine on your compie, to run lots of windows stuff. as long as i can play the MS games, it's all good.

macs are known to be good at photo editing, type setting & whatever over a pc but versatility & costs, the pc beats a mac hands down!

When Windows 95 came out, MAC users could say that Windows 95 was a "poor copy" of MAC O/S and they had a legitimate beef. But after XP…not anymore. That dog won't hunt!!

lol Neph that was freakin hilarious, I'm gonna quote you on that. MACS SUCK! They are not good for anything. Whatever a mac can do, a PC can do 5 times better. True, ten years ago PCs weren't as stable as MACs, but those days are long gone, so you mac nerds better watch out, cause Steve is an idiot and the only think keeping apple alive is your stupid little preppy ipods.

Also, I personally don't like WinXP either...it was made to have a nice little lame interface to immitate OS X. Win2000 is by FAR the most stable operating system out there. I have a few servers with Win2k pro that have been running for over 4 years straight, not a single hiccup. I recently have been forced to switch to XP because Pro Tools, Premiere, Avid XPress and others only run on XP. But DOWN WITH APPLE!

when two factions of the populace, with very different outlooks and opinions, join together with one thought, you know it's a sign. of what, i have no idea.

Macs are good for photo editing (which is why most photographers have a mac), but PCs are good too. I have Photoshop CS on my computer and it works pretty nice. Another downside for the mac is that a lot of programs aren't available to Mac as they are with the PC.
