Ok so I burnt a ton of movies onto a sony dvd-r, which played in my phillips divx dvd player. But it won't play in any other normal dvd player. So I thought maybe try a dvd+r. That doesn't even work in my divx player, or even on my computer that I just burnt it from. What the hell is wrong with +R discs? And why won't other dvd players play the -r disc?

Make sure your firmware is current. Try booktyping your dvd+r's to dvd-rom. Start by burning the discs at 1/2 their rated speed then try 8x but no faster if all goes well.

Someone gave me a link to some firmware site, but I couldn't search my writer on it. The only thing Ive successfully put onto a +r are mp3s. I have sony -r's and memorex +r's by the way. I don't know what you mean by booktyping though.

upgrade your firmware for your burner,as that sets new write strategies for new media thats out..and the media you are using can and will cause the problem you are having..

Firmware is programming that is inserted into a programmable memory area of your drive, thus becoming a permanent part of a drive. This 'software' is called firmware and can be updated with a firmware flasher. Every company has its own methods to allow you to do a firmware upgrade. A firmware upgrade can add new functionality to your drive. Also bug fixes and improvements are done by firmware upgrades. To find you firmware go to your burner homepage and find the firmware for you make and model.

go here to see if ye burner is listed and update ye firmware

The link you gave me for firmware, I found my burner, but it says the update's not for oem models. I purchased mine separate from newegg as an upgrade from my cd burner, so i don't know if it will work or not. My burner is NEC 3550A OEM. Media I have tried using is Memorex 4.7GB 16X DVD+R , which so far only mp3's have worked on. And then Sony Dvd-R 4.7gb 16x. These have worked for straight copies of movies, but not with .avi files being read in normal dvd players.
