Subtitles, converted from SRT file with Srt2Sup look strange on DVD

After some problems with aspect ratio and sound (which I was able to solve thanks to the guides and forum threads), I managed to get a clear DVD with great sound from an Xvid avi file.
However, the subtitles keep appearing in a fluorescent green, "blocky" text, in spite of tweaking and trying different settings in Srt2Sup's global settings, hoping to get clear, white subs.
Does anyone have an idea what's the problem, and how to solve this?

Yes, they failed (I think) - i tried a couple of settings, but got the same result each time
