I have a slightly similiar problem as sirenia said.

This is what happened. I was burning dvd's fine using dvd shrink. It would take exactly 13 min to burn a dvd, 4.4 gig. I have a new HP computer that writes dvd's at 4x.

I recently updated the aspi with this:

    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?sess=no&language=E
    nglish+US&cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70&filekey=aspi_471a2.exe

I also updated my chipset drivers for my motherboard, but I don't think this caused the problem.

My PROBLEM now, is when I burn a DVD at 4x, that's my max speed, it now takes about 25 min, instead of 13. This is drving me nuts. What can I do to fix this?

    JasonnB,

Huuummm, we have to ask our selves, what has changed since that time. Not your ASPI or drivers (or you could roll back). Did you try the exact same original disc ? The same blank DVD's ? Ehat did you change ?

If you answer is nothing else AND you're running XP then go back to before you had the problem THEN you can add your ASPI and check then add your drivers and check again,

Let me know how you do -

    Pete

Yes, I used the same media. I have a 25 pack of 4x TDK, that always writes a full disc in about 13-15 min max.

Now it's talking 25 min, and Nero even shows it's burning at 4x in he drop down box.

This happened after I did he aspi update and firmware for the motherboard. I did both, now it seems to have slowed down.

I ran that Nero info tool, and read some other posts in the forum about the information in there.

    Does this help you?

Do you use an instant messaging program?

    I don't doubt you I just said check -

Have you done an Sys restore ?

If you have and the problem remains the same then it's hardware -

You can always roll it back -

    Cheers,

    Here is aspichk

I just posted those images so I'm not missing anything. I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to this stuff.

I installed the aspi and motherboard updates on the 30th. When I go into XP system restore, it shows a list of stuff/installs I did that day, and it doesn't show anything for the aspi I installed or motherboard update. Does this mean if I restore it, it will still put it back the way it was?

    Thanks again,

    Jason

    Jason,

LQQk's we might be closing in (I hope, Lol) -

Go to the day before, when you were burning well and let it restore there. Worst-case scenario,
    1. It won't do anything so then, If you wish, you can reverse the restore OR,
    2. You'll have to reinstall your MB update stuff and any other updates you did.

NOTE: All your installs should be listed in your restore. If they aren't redo them and check to make sure they are there. If they still don't show don't sweat it. I have had some things that didn't show and so I did them over, made sure they showed in ASPI check, Firmware tool or another proggy didn't worry about them and guess what, my PC never suffered an atomic meltdown or incinerated my home.

The "restore" function is a pretty handy tool in XP.

Let me know how it went,

    Pete

Do you have an instant message program. I'm me if you can. I'm on AIM: JNB133

Ok... Yea, the day I installed everything, was the 30th. In the restore, the MB update .exe, and the aspi .exe, aren't listed, but other stuff I did was listed that day.

So, I will try to install both again (mb update and aspi), and see if they show up for the day I did it at least.

I'm going to wait to do this stuff until they next time I'm ready to burn another dvd. I don't want to keep wasting dvd's to test this until I'm ready to burn something again.

I guess there's no other way to test it, but to do a burn? It's funny, when I start the dvd burn in NERO, it shows a countdown time at around 13 min, but it takes double.

I forget if I mentioned it, but my burning time for CDR music cd's has remained the same before/after I did these updates. My CDR burns are still 6 min.

A copy of the Nero log file from the write attempt would help us see why its taking longer to burn than before. I suspect buffer underruns, or Queue again errors, but must see the log file first before saying for sure.

Are the log files stored somewhere, or do I have to wait until the next time I burn one, and then save it?

If you fail to save it, it will be in the C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero folder saved as NeroHistory.log and it will contain the last 5 or more write attempts. Only the last log is what we are interested in, unless they are show the same thing.

I notice in the log file where you indicate the speed was normal, you have DMA enabled.

And in the log where you indicate it now takes 22mins, the DMA is disabled.

I would suspect that the DMA is more than likely the cause in the change in speeds.

Ok, so I guess the question is how do I get the DMA back on? In device manager it shows two primary and two seconday.

Here some info showing what device manager says and the nero info tool.

    JasonnB,

[/b] Windows XP downgrades the Ultra DMA transfer mode after receiving six CRC errors and drops it down to the much slower PIO mode.

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager
    1. Open Device Manager
    2. Double-click IDE ATA//ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
    3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which your burner is connected and select Properties. Now click the Advanced Settings tab.
    4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if available if the current setting says, "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already says, "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must "toggle" the settings. That is, change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click "OK".

Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to "DMA if available".

OPTION: Right-click the burner and select "Uninstall" and then "OK" all prompts until the PC reboots. Upon rebooting, the PC should "find" your burner and reinstall it setting it by "Default" to DMA.

Lastly, when did you last defrag your Hard Drive (HD) ? If you have to stop and think about the last time you did it, then it's way, way overdue. Here we go, (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. When it opens, choose your HD, analyses it to see where we stand then if you need it (you probably will) choose Defragment.).

After you finish doing it now you might want to think about having "Scheduled Tasks" in your Control Panel do it for you on a daily basis.

A fragmented HD not only drastically slows down your system but it can cause all number of things to happen inside your PC, a messed up burn being one of them.

    Cheers,

    Pete

    Thanks again guys.

    Pete:

I'm starting to feel a little dumb here, but everything seems to look ok? But, the DMA is still showing off when I run the Nero Info tool for the dvd burner.

Here is a look in my device manager. I don't know why I have two primary and two seconday IDE's. I know the buner is on primary, but I don't know which primary. Here's a screenshot of both, maybe this will help.

I also uninstalled the burner and rebooted and the settings looks the same as that screen shot. I haven't tried removing primary and secondaries yet. Should I remove them all if I do that?

If you have just the one burner then the one on the bottom looks good.

The one on the top is probably a HD so doesn't have a current transfer app.

Looking at your past posts, you say you were burning in 14 minues and then slowed to 22 minutes. They are both normal times. Some DVD's are a little harder to burn, more special effects takes a bit longer as does the length of the DVD. Where you should worry is when it takes an hour without Quality Enhancements (QE's).

The speed you're burning tells me that you're not doing top quality backups. Using DVD Shrink with QE's may take an hour and 1/2, sometimes more,i.e. Braveheart and that's with a PC like mine.

How is it working is the main thing ?

Well, it's working good, just that it takes longer. I've been using DVD shrink since I started doing this.

I then drag the VideoTS files into nero and burn DVDvideo at 4x.

What I don't get is, the nero info tool says DMA is off, and if you look at my NERO LOGS above, it shows that it was on, and the other log show it is OFF, and that's when the slow down in the burn occured.

Also, the other difference in the logs is, the 1st faster log has:

WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=1.0.0.0, size=21504 bytes, created 4/7/2003 11:39:24 PM (with dma listed as on)

    and the slower log has:

WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=4.71 (0002), size=45056 bytes, created 7/17/2002 10:03:20 AM (with dma listed as off)

Is there anything else I can try to get DMA on? Should I remove the 2nd primary IDE and reboot?

Try deleting both of your IDE ATA/ATAPI conrollers in device manager and then restart your computer and let windows load them automatically. This could work it has for others. It can't hurt to try..
