Can you use PCI-E? Or are you stuck with AGP?

Basically, if you have PCI-E, than you can get one anywhere.

If you're using some flavor of AGP, then you're really stuck, because newer cards are hardly made using that form factor, and they are more expensive. My Geforce fx 5700le (One of the higher fx series) costed around $150 to get in agp, even back in january, that was honestly way more than it should have been, but after doing some serious looking all over the internet, that was the best around, and it was some little hole in the wall website.

So, hopefully, you've got a PCI-E bus. That would make your search so easy, otherwise, well.... Hope you're ready to scour for something that really won't be worth your time or money.

    @ Kidcapo

It sounds like your video card isnt supported.
Read my POST the second one on the first page.
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/327012/1908347

It has all the fixes needed to get the game working on
    older unsupported cards.

    Supported Video Card Chipsets:
    ATI X1900 series
    ATI X1800 series
    ATI X1600 series
    ATI X1300 series
    ATI X850 series
    ATI x800 series
    ATI x700 series
    ATI x600 series
    ATI Radeon 9800 series
    ATI Radeon 9700 series
    ATI Radeon 9600 series
    ATI Radeon 9500 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 7800 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 6800 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 6600 series
    NVIDIA GeForce 6200 series

If your card IS NOT in this list you MUST run the fixes and shaders.
If it is supported then its probably a driver issue.
Post back with some system speca and maybe
even a save file before the point it freezes.
(you can upload to megaupload.com free of charge.)

You can try my tweaked .ini file
setup and see if it helps.

Good luck and welcome to the forums.

    @ ganja46

Make sure your video drivers are updated,
(And turn off 'bloom' lighting in the video menu.)
This thread is mainly for unsupported cards,
But you may benifit from trying one od those options,
Good luck and welcome to the forums.

While I could already get the game running, I downloaded the Old Oblivion from here to make it run better. But now I can't get rid of those rainbow colors, while on the plane of Oblivion! I've made sure the Bloom effect is off, even turned it on so I could turn it off again; and I even downloaded the oblivion.ini from here. That didn't help any. If anyone can tell me what the problem may be, I'd appreciate the help.

Just wanted to take a moment to thank those who have posted such clear and helpful information on this thread. Recently bought Oblivion on the cheap and could only get white screens outside of the menus using my RADEON 9200 128MB, P4HT 2.4Ghz, 2GB.

By patching the INI and adding texture packs as described at the start of this thread, I am now able to play at an acceptable 27-30FPS.

My trees still sometimes flicker and bushes turn blue-ish grey after playing for a while (they are fine at first). Also, when underwater, there is no change to the viewing colour - but at least the lakes, drains, and ponds are not day-glow purple!

If there are any suggestions for tweaks that might address these situations permanently I would love to hear them. Also, if someone could post a comment explaining the way that the 'smooth talk' system is supposed to work, I would be an especially happy day for me.

Thanks again for allowing me the opporotunity to play this excellent game. Readers of this board are lucky to have the kind of information that has been given here.

    Cheers,
    J.

Your need to replace the shaders and use the video fix,
on some cards just oldbilivion isnt enough.
Do all my recommendations on the post,
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/327012/1908347
You will then be able to exit the video menu option
    without crash.
You can then edit the options to fix the lighting issues.
Make sure you have the patched Oblivion.exe file
Also you should be using Oldblivion to run the game,
And not the original oblivion.exe. (To run the game itself.)

    Teach and learn..
Thanks for your kind words for they do not fall on deaf ears.

Just got the game, heard the hype, so i tried it, it detected me as med settings, i let it go, the vid before character build wouldnt play right, but i hit space and i built my character fine and played the start of the game, killed a couple rats etc.

Just dont think iv got it on the best settings, so im wondering how to get it to play smooth and look good, on a
    2.4ghz p4
    pny geforce 6600le AGP8x
    1gb ram

Any recommendations? I was gonna get the 1.5... patch from gamespot is that a good idea?

The vid doesnt play right, it plays a couple secs, jumps, and sound jumps, then plays a couple secs etc

I can skip the vid and the gameplay is fine, dont know the fps but its smooth, and nice looking enough, but after 20 mins theres glitches like sharp spikes that arent supposed to be there and holes in the characters. Its ok after a restart tho.

Should i try the stuff at the start of this thread? Or is there anything else i can try?

Have continued to tweak things following install of latest Oldblivion set. Am happy with everything now except for indoor lighting. All indoor scenes are full-bright - no shadows at all. Any ideas of where to look for a fix in the .ini? Have hunted and pecked at stuff with 'light' and 'shadow' and 'bright' in the line titles, but no joy yet.
    Any help would be appreciated.
