If you are using a laptop , you will need both USB Adapter PLUS a NULL MODEM CABLE

These are the cables you need to flash the firmware.

If you have a computer or a laptop with a 9 pin serial com port which is male on the back all you will need is this,

Female to Female Serial Null Modem Cable which looks like this,

    null modem cable

Make sure you do not buy a Serial RS232 9-Pin Female to Female cable
they seems to be quite a few people buying this from mapl*ns,
It has to be a SERIAL NULL MODEM CABLE Like the one above!!

    rs232 cable wrong one

If you have a computer or laptop without a 9 pin serial socket you will still need the
Female to Female Serial Null Modem Cable as above and this USB to Serial DB9 Adaptor Converter
to make it fit into your USB port

    usb adapter

Just want to point out that the null modem and rs232 from maplins look the exact same but aren't. mine looks exactly the same as the one in your picture saying it's wrong but it works and is called null modem. they both look the same in maplins but aren't so don't be fooled.

Part numbers are differenet in Maplins between the two cables. Ask for a Null Modem cable without knowing the part number doesnt say they will give you the right one.

And yes I have the exact same "wrong" cable that has been working for years, all a matter of DTE to DCE :)

    Sreo

Serial RS232 9-Pin will not work as a null modem cable it has to say null modem that is a picture of a rs232 cable not a null modem cable lots of people have purchased the above cable from maplins only to find out it is the wrong cable they do look very similar yes you are correct but the internal wiring is very different

    this is a rs232 cable code L68BT
    [IMG]

this is a null modem cable code L71BT
    [IMG]

so you can see how confusing it is the picture is only to show people exactly what they want to buy if buying else where not from maplins

so can you tell the difference between the cables both are different cables and do different things some people will see your post and be shown the rs232 cables and think that is them so unless they ask for null modem cable they could end up with and rs232 cable as some of the shop assistance dont know themselves as it is hard to tell the difference

I got an rs232 from maplins that wouldn't work but i got a null modem cable from them and brought the rs232 back and it worked. though it took 4 days before they were n stock which means 4 visits all the way into town and on the phone they were always in stock but not when we got there. mine says serial lead [null modem] on the front and it works so I got lucky then.

you will need to flash your box with either 4.50 for Ireland or 4.51 for the uk you will find them in the firmware section of the box folder in eamos library under my pic you will also need to download the loader found in the hardware section, are you sure its a starview 2 does it say the box on the actual box?and also make sure you dont have a clone.
